Hey, i dont know where to put this really as its not exactly equestrian.

10 years ago i had a bad fall and dislocated my shoulder. Doctors said i would need it pinning as the socket is ruined and it would continue to dislocate.

However, being a first class baby, i refused. Over the years my shoulder has dislocated doing a variety of things varying from falling over to opening the curtains. I have grown used to limited mobility in this arm, never really being able to move it above shoulder height.

However, i fell off my horse in October and i think i overcopensated worrying about landing on my shoulder so i fell on my backside and broke my coccyx (dohh!!)

Has anyone had any experiences similar to this, or any recommendations besides "get a grip and have it pinned!!"

I am the ultimate wuss and the thought of any sort or surgery makes me faint i cant even go to the dentist without fainting :(

hi! ive had exactly the same, i was having a saddle fitted on my horse about 4yrs ago and he put me under the saddlers car! the docs also said i had to have it operated on.....i also keep putting it off!!!

can i really afford upto 7months off work and nearly A WHOLE YEAR off riding.....no!!!!

but it rolls out doing the easiest of things now, even just doing my foals rug rug, i cannot groom or clip, clipping makes it fall out the socket :)
i am however thinking that i should have the operation......i dont want to get to 30 and not be able to do anything.....its a hard one though, so i know how you feel!!!

Nothing terribly useful to say, except that i have a similar problem, but with my ankle.I am now officially on the waiting list ,as of today to have my ankle pinned together.Feel sick just thinking about it,and worried how it will affect my riding, but needs must as ive been suffering for 8 years now.
Good luck with what you decide to do......not easy. xxx

Oh no!! It sounds awful guys, poor you!! Yet im also kind of relieved that im not the only one!!

Forest Imp - a year off riding for a shoulder pinning surgery?? I have never been given the facts as i was only a child the first time round and ive not been back to the doctors since for it!!
(well i went to ask if physio was any good but i was told that id have arthritis at a young age and i shouldnt be riding incase i was to fall off again!!, so i ignored that doctor!!)
Also you say it just rolls out (know that feeling) are you in pain when it does come out?

Thanks guys, its good to hear from you :)

A friends OH had the op to tighten the ligaments after his shoulder got so bad he had to wear a brace at night to stop it popping when he rolled over. It went well and he has now got a greater range of movement than before the op, it no longer pops out and the recovery was about 2 weeks of nothing followed by 3 months of careful then he was back to playing hockey.

The op might be worth it.

I first dislocated my shoulder nearly 20 years ago by hanging onto the reins when I fell off - d'oh!

Since then, it's probably come out 20 or 30 times, but I've always been able to put it back in. I have fairly loose ligaments, apparently, not sure if that's a pro or a con! I've never been offered an op for it, but tbh it doesn't really cause me much trouble. I have almost full movement in it, and I just have to be careful doing certain things, like if I'm lying on my back, I wouldn't be able to put my arm above my head and relax, or it would fall out! Also need to be careful when putting a jacket on - dislocated it a few times doing that!

Hi op, sorry to hear this - I did the same 20 years ago, dislocated my shoulder and then it kept going out (12 times in total) - it was a nightmare of pain and worry. I even had it go jumping into a swimming pool! Then finally my horse barged into me and really knackered it up - so the consultant recommended an op called a putti plait where they reattach the ligaments torn from the bone and tighten up othe ones that hold it in place. ( dont know if this is the same as what you have been offered).

Anyway, yes I had 9 months off riding, couldnt drive for 3 months, couldnt even move my arm from my side for 6 months! But I would recommend having the operation, I can do practically everything riding wise I did before and it is very stable, no worrying its going to come out again.
I know the recovery is long, but 5 years on im so glad i had it done.

good luck.xx

I've just typed a really long reply to this in Soapbox - can't really be bothered typing it out again, but to sum up, I've had exactly the same problem - put it off for several years, finally bit the bullet and had it done - yes slow recovery and painful, but SO worth it. Never looked back for ages - until - my husband's hunter tried to jump over me and hit me full on, moving all the pins (by the way tightening the ligaments is an option for less serious dislocations usually - when its coming out all the time it needs pinning - which is still keyhole surgery and left no scars whatsoever..). So I'm now on the list waiting for the same thing again.

For those of you who are putting it off, I should point out that as you get older, you may very well start to get back complications like me due to all the things you've done crooked over the past x years while you've tried to avoid "doing" your shoulder. So you're not doing yourselves any good...

Anyway - more details on Soapbox. Feel free to pm me if you like...xx

My daughter (Marchtime) has just had surgery for this problem. She is one week post op and has 5 more with her arm strapped to her side and then I think, 6 months rehab. She fell off her pony aged 12 and for the last few years has had endless problems and back problems. She put off having stuff done as she is very competitive and did not want 6 months off but lost her good horse last year and only has a baby and an oldie now- so she has seized the moment! So far, she seems very happy with things. I, on the other hand, am back to being chief groom and ***** shoveller:rolleyes: Haven't had to do it all for years and she is a bossy "supervisor".

My OH dislocated his should about 20 years ago, had loads of trouble with it dislocating that often he got to the point where he could put it back in himself!! Yuk.
Anyway about years ago he slipped emptying a wheelbarrow of all things but this time he could not get it back in, so off to a&e. It turns out that he had bits of bone in the socket which is why it would come out so often. They decided to operate, which he was terrified about but has not looked back since. 3 months off work to gain the movement and strength back and now as good as new.
Go for it you will not regret it!!!
