Disposing of old riding hats and back protectors

Just wondering what everybody does with their old riding hats and back protectors. Had a clear out at home and found a couple of hats and a back protector.

I dont want to sell them on. Do I just throw them in the bin. Does anybody know of any schemes where old riding kit can be sent back to companies and be disposed of correctly. could the hats IF STILL suitable be sent to less develpoed countries.

Any opinions, suggestions, answers welcome. Thanks for reading.

I had our old hats checked out first before I donated them by our local hat fitter - she discarded one and said that the others would be fine - my daughter had only grown out of them - they tend to use them on those who will only be walking with assistance either side anyway.

We would NEVER accept donated used hats at our RDA group, I'm afraid. Sometimes, those riders who have two walkers are the ones who are most likely to eject with no notice.
As for used hats, I'm an infant teacher and mine go to school for the children who 'ride' the hobby horses to wear. There are 2 reasons, 1) It gets them to think about safety, just as wearing a safety helmet on the bikes does 2) it enforces sensible turn-taking.
 
I had to take mine to the dump as it had been damaged when I fell off (confirmed by hat fitter woman) so I had to take it there and get them to hide it deep down cos it was damaged and if someone did steal it and use it it wouldn't protect them etc. It was complicated haha
 
I had an old GPA I used to wear in the rain to keep my 2 other GPAs ( not the posh ones) for better days - sorry had to say that, I don't want people thinking I am loaded. Inside it was dated 2001. I heard somewhere riding hats only have a certain life and I quizzed the forum 5 years seemed to be the mark, or if it had been dropped or fallen on. This question only arose when I went to the back of the car to find aforementioned GPA which had disappeared without trace! Either it fell out of the back of the car at some point, or it rolled off the bonnet and we drove away without it, or the hat fairies took it! Either way round it is no longer with us and knowing it was overdue for replacement I am not that worried - I just hope someone hasn't found it and started to use it.
It seems to me getting rid of an old hat is easy - leave it to the hat fairies, drive off leaving it on the bonnet, or let it fall out of the back of the car without noticing and there it is GONE! Lol. I really believe they should be thrown away unless they are within 5 years and have been outgrown and not damaged in which case pass on to someone deserving :)
 
someone i know had a good idea, they cut the straps off of hats before puting them to the skip that way they cant be used again
mine seem to just sit in the tack room gathering dust, really should have a clear out
