I feed round bale haylage ad lib in the field from a hay rack and inevitably there seems to be an awful lot deposited on the ground that nobody will eat. In the past, I have raked it up and dumped it in a corner which isn't ideal. Even though I have all the equipment, it is still a chore and the heaps don't seem to be in any hurry to rot down. Any ideas?

I've just hitched up the hay turner and thought I would try treating it like hay in the hope of drying it out, then putting a match to it but I am not sure this will work at this time of the year.

Any bright ideas anyone?

I burn mine, bit by bit in a waste part of the yard. It takes FOREVER to rot either in a heap or in the field, but I don't have huge amounts in the field, just the odd bale in the stack that has got a hole in the wrap. I dismantle it and burn it in the yard over several days. Could you not burn a heap in the field ? Don't worry about how dry it is or isn't - it'll be dry enough once it gets going lol.

We wait till the ground is dry and either get our muck man to scoop it up with his grabber when he comes to take our muck away or as mentioned above we set fire to it in the field and burn it, i wouldnt do this yet though i would wait for it to dry out more
