Hi,

Im currently undertaking a research project for university looking in perceptions of equine welfare in horseracing. As part of which Im looking to get as many respondents as possible for my survey.

I would be massively grateful if anyone could just take a few minutes to fill the survey as in the link below.

Many Thanks,

Jessica

"Horses should not used for human entertainment" so unless for meat what other uses are there?

I thought the same and assumed all the way through that the student was anti racing. Are these surveys not devalued unless they are neutral ?

Doing work? Ploughing, pulling, carrying...

Emotional and physical wellbeing? Riding for the disabled, EAGALA...

Teaching? Veterinary, Hollesley Bay...

Research? Veterinary, medical...

Mares' pee? HRT medication...

In areas where horseracing, on tracks, is a sport I don't know of any horses kept solely for transport. Few are used for haulage or agriculture and RDA etc comes under the entertainment section.
If horses were not ridden or kept for entertainment then equine vets and the rest of the industry would be thinned or defunct.
HRT is thankfully becomming less reliant on mares' urine.

Very poor questionaire with leading questions.

I think it would be better if there was a "Don't know" or "Not sure" option on some questions, e.g. "fatality rate is higher in racing than in any other sport" - I think it is higher than most other sports (I'm assuming horse fatality rate and other horse sports). So is that an "Agree" or a "Strongly Agree"?

Maybe space for comments on some of the questions would have been helpful too. For example, I would have to answer the question "How often do you watch horseracing on TV?" with rarely (and it wouldn't necessarily be only big races), but in the 1980s I used to watch racing avidly to the extent of videotaping the racing on the other channel so that I wouldn't miss a single televised race. I also attended actual races. So if the question was designed to gauge how aware I am of what goes on in racing, the truthful answer about my present habits might give an incorrect impression.

I did it but found some questions very leading, the photos taken out of context are difficult to score as are some of the scenarios towards the end, a mare that has a poor racing record could prove to be a brilliant broodmare.

I was just answering your question - they are other uses.

And I'm puzzled why you say RDA is classified as entertainment. Is this an official classification or your opinion?

RDA may be used as therapy but only because the horses are trained for riding. Equine therapy where they don't ride may be more of a medic aid but why not have porcine therapy? The horse is incidental.

Sorry OP, but I wouldn't complete this as the questions are IMHO skewed towards a suggested response rather than a thought about response, neither is the whole survey thought out in a reasonable fashion. Are you 1st year?

I would suggest you would be better off re-thinking the whole survey, pus aside your passions & be logical in posing questions.

Okay, I take your point, though I would still consider this as a separate use and not all uses are mutually exclusive.

I do agree sometimes the question can be a loaded or leading question, but you can still disagree fully or agree etc so that's ok. Just could have done with a 'don't know' option for a couple.

Good luck with the remains of your degree OP.

Ploughed on through the survey as best I could, so done.

What on earth does 'The level of welfare in racing reflects my level of participation within the sport eg watching racing on TV or attending the races' mean?

Numbering the questions would have been helpful.

Thank you to everyone who has completed the survey. To clear a few things up, the idea of the statements are for respondents to give their own opinion whether you agree or disagree. The point is that the pictures are taken out of context, to see how people may view pictures within media. The survey is based on projective ideas to gain insight to opinions and beliefs. The questions are not statement of facts.
I actually work in racing and so am definitely not anti-racing.
But thank you for some of your criticism, most helpful

I did it and submitted it.
I didn't think that your questions were leading, as there was a complete spectrum of answers available to choose from.
I thought it was a well-designed survey - far better than many we are asked to complete on here. I have started many and given up on them as they were either impossible to decipher or simply so badly designed that the questions were not applicable to my situation, as the students obviously only have their own set-ups in mind.
Well done, OP
