Dissertation Ideas on Racing

Hi,
I am a third year student looking for inspiration on my dissertation topic. I study Equine Business therefore the idea would have to be based with business in mind.
I know that I will try harder if it is something that interests me therefore I thought the National Hunt Racing Industry and my original idea was 'how the recession has affected the national hunt racing industry' however this is a broad topic and with 10,000 words it probably best to choose a smaller field and then to expand a lot further.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

How about - how the recession has hit the riding school industry.

Many people involved in the racing industry are wealthy people who would not have noticed the recession, whereas the riding school scene is used by all types of people.

If you are interested in NH racing in particular how about amending your proposed title to narrow it down to the proportion of horses owned by a single owner vs those syndicated? (or if this ends up being too narrow you can do this but also include a comparison with flat racing to see if the effect is different - I bet it is).

errr this is a bit of a misconception, working in the industry I am only too aware that the first thing to go when rich people feel the pinch is their expensive hobby. A lot of stud and stable staff have lost there jobs, 10 years ago I could walk into virtually any stud, today it is much harder, everywhere is being run a tight rein with as little staff as possible, even the likes of Darley where they have a lot of staff on 6 month rolling contracts so they can get rid of them quickly and a lot of mares have been culled, not to mention all the poor racehorses that end up in Kuwait etc from the sales.
