Dissertation survey about the welfare of race horses

Thanks for the interest guys, anyone interested in the real figures after completing the survey pm me your email address and i'll forward them on to you :)

What exactly is your dissertation on? Is it the public perception of race horses? Just interested, you are very fortunate to be able to use these surveys now, when I was doing mine, 7 years ago, I had to post out a whole load with SAEs! I came up with mine from my work during my year in Industry, so it was a comparison of Flat racing TBs, homebred vs sales prepped in their two year old year, using the statistics of their number of runs, first run, wins etc.

Laafet

The dissertation looks at the public's perception of racing and how aware they are of the injuries and fatalities involved, thanks for the interest

personally i am very dubious of this because all of your questions relate to the Grand National, fatalities and then you ask what should be the minimum age? Clearly there are already rules in place and common sense dictates that a 3year old will not be running in the Grand national. I might be missing something but it looks like you are trying to put two very different sports under the same umbrella!

sorry if it looks that way mutley75 but only 1 of the questions refers to the Grand National, the rest are general about racing. thanks for the interest

Sorry to throw spanners in the works, but what is the title of the dissertation? Is it "perceptions of racing welfare "

You don't differentiate between UK and ROW or between Flat, / bumpers/ Hurdles and Fences.
In the UK there are rules preventing jump racing of young horses, and also no jumping on dirt/allweather courses. In other countries rules vary.
You don't allow that people in the industry might have a more educated view, is there a direct correlation between sources of information and viewpoints?
How many horses do people think completed / failed to complete the GN in past ten years.... not sure how this can be used to determine welfare, I dare say there are many welfare considerations, but will they be answered by peoples perceptions, sorry I think you need to go back to the drawing board.
Even within the GN there are more stats than can be analysed by statisticians with a high degree of reliability so throw in a whole industry, and you will find it impossible to prove welfare benefits are gained by one thing or another in isolation.
A lot of people on here get uptight about ulcers in TB ex racers, but this is not so common in NH horses, or at least we don't think so.

it is a dissertation to analyse statistics about the general public's perception of racing and how aware they are of injuries and fatalities. unless specified in the question, it is not about the grand national but about horse racing generally, thanks for the interest

Fair enough, but we are not the general public, to survey the general public you have to do what market research people do, select a cross section of Joe [and josehine] public.
P.S. I knew it was a mistake to get involved, just do what you think best!
