Hello name is Katie Hamilton, I am currently in my final year of my BSc (Hons) Human and Equine Sports Performance degree. For my dissertation I am carrying out an investigation to document prevalence of disordered eating patterns in the leisure rider.

If you are a horse rider and are riding at LEAST 3 times a week then please take the time to fill in this questionnaire. The questionnaire will be completely anonymous.

Please complete the questionnaire using the link below:

Many Thanks in advanced.

There is currently very little research done on eating disorders in horse riders. And so thought it would be interesting to look at to see if there is any correlation.

There is a lot of research completed in eating disorders in a range of other sports, using this specific questionnaire, however there has only ever been one study produced on horse riders, and this was done in jockeys who have unusual eating patterns anyway.

Just thought it would be interesting to look at and see what correlations occur and whether it may be discipline specific etc.

Very curious as to how eating disorders may be associated to horse riding.
I tend to focus on saturated fat content though, not carbohydrates.

Done, although when you said "disordered eating patterns" I confess I was expecting questions about eating rubbish after coming in knackered at 10pm, or eating large amounts of rubbish because of being out in the cold all day ...

Might be interesting to see if it's linked to the level that people are riding at, rather than just discipline linked? My "discipline" (:p) is dressage, but I'd have more in common with a leisure rider who does very low level showjumping etc than with a dressage diva!

Completed the survey but as others have said, was expecting it to be more about a disordered eating pattern ie eating late at night after being at yard all eve/grabbing a snack where possible at lunch because busy riding etc and I'd have thought there'd more likely be a link there than to horse riders with eating disorders...that said, the amount of 'I'm 7st am I too fat for my shire horse' type posts on here may suggest otherwise!! :D Good luck, be interested to hear your findings.

I didnt think that was a very good survey at all. In fact, I wish Id have known there wasnt another page to do as it sent before I expected, as Id decided not to send it at all.

The questions were much too ambiguous and unclear imo, no good at all.

This. Do you compete, if you answer no the next question would be affiliated, unaffiliated or both. But you just said you didn't compete!

Done - although I was about as comfortable putting my weight in the box as I would be posting my full bank details on a public forum!:p
Despite criticisms from other posters, I found the questionnaire quite thought-provoking.... I answered as turthfully as I could and realised I do worry more thani I realised myself about my weight and what I eat...

This. You really should have a 'finish' button rather that 'next'

Done too. Infact we were discussing this at the yard only this morning, although as previously mentioned more with regards to eating patterns. The other liveried were horrified I had mucked out my two, taken my mare in the trailer to go for a 3 hour hack and still hadn't had breakfast by 2.30. Though, one livery lives closer to the yard and rarely rides, the ither is the yard owner and he stays on site. That is my norm at the weekend, I don't eat till I get home and that depends entirely on how long I faff about at the yard. During the week i eat once the horses are done and i get to work. I would be interested to hear the results of the questionnaire.

As it would not allow me to not complete the affiliated/none affiliated, I chose not to continue.
I do wish that all the students who ask us to fill out these surveys would check them more carefully, thus not wasting my time.

Done :) I think it will be very interesting to find the results. I find that horses are quite restricting when it comes to meals for example I don't get back from doing the horses in the evening until about 8.30pm so end up having dinner around 9.30pm most nights! On the weekends Im at the yard all day so dont usually bother with breakfast, once in a blue moon will have some lunch but normally just have a sandwidge when i get home in the dinner. This isn't because I have an eating disorder, simply be because i don't have time and I'm not hungry!

Done! Think it could have been a bit better though...

Done - not sure you can do affilliated hacking, so I settled for unaffilliated:D

Same! I put hacking originally, but as I had to choose either unaff. or aff. I changed my main discipline to showing as I thought that it meant my main discipline in a competitive environment, however, I'm lucky if I get to go to more then five shows per year due to lack of transport :(
