Hi, after 4 weeks of lameness our pony has now been diagnosed with distal sesamoidean ligament injury and we are to box rest / walk in hand/ 3 x shockwave treatment - would appreciate anyone experience of this x

I owned a racehorse who was retired with this in a hind leg. He had strained it so badly he had partially pulled the ligament off the sesamoid bone. I bought him at the end of one year's rest and brought him back into work including cross country with no further problems at all.

Good luck with yours :)

Very interested in this thread my horse has damaged the oblique sesamoidian ligament and like yours damage bad with ligament causes boney changes. He is however barely lame. He has had PRP into the ligament and will start shockwave in 2 weeks time, he is on box rest for 3 months with 10 minute walks and hand grazing then re scan. Vet obviously pessimistic but had said had seen horses with worse damage come back to previous competition level. Was yours turned away for a year? Did he/she has swelling to the pastern if so did this go with the rest?

There was permanent thickening which at the time of the injury must have been very severe. After a year he was sold to me because the prognosis was that he would not stand up to racing. I brought him steadily back into work and he show jumped and did cross country with no problems at all.

Hi

My sport horse has been diagnosed with this last friday. He has a 2cm hole in the ligament as well as it starting to detach :( He is currently on 6 weeks box rest and shockwave every 12 days as well as danilon. Mine has done it in his RH whereas all of the information I have found is generally a forelimb - My vet is now referring to Newmarket and the RVC to see if any other treatment is recommended. Hope your pony recovers soon

Mine has had PRP might be worth asking about, Im with fellows Farm and they recommended this as gold standard treatment to kick start the healing process followed by 4 weeks of shock wave starting 21/8/13. Is your horse very lame? Mine isnt needing any bute at the moment he is actually sound when you trot him up and 4/10 lame on a the lunge on a hard surrface. he is currently on 13 weeks box rest with 10 minute inhand walking a day and hand grazing for as long as we can bare. What kind of prognosis has the vet given for yours? Have been struggling to find much online about this type of injury.

Hello,

Just wondered how everyone's horses were doing with this injury? What treatment plan you are all following?

My boy has just ha his second shockwave treatment, he has two more then will be re assessed then scanned at the 12 week point.

Thanks :)
