Well oreo is on box rest because she is an imbecile and somehow managed to severely cut her leg on the wire surrounding her field :(. She cut about a 4 inch flap down her cannon bone (hind) and a long deep cut on the front of her hock, luckily no bone/joint damage. So she's now back home, healing well so far, but she's starting to stress about being left on her own during the day. Yesterday she hadn't touched much food or water and hadn't pooed all day until later that night (dad did a late check on her), presumably because polo had been brought in around 5. For the most part she wasn't stressing whilst in horsepital but then she did have other horses in around her, even though sometimes she couldn't see them at all .
We can't leave poor polo in all day and night as its just not fair for him to be on box rest for no reason, and i think he'd quickly become very stressed out (much more of a brave it out in the field kind of horse ;)) but equally i don't want oreo to colic or stress to much as that won't help her healing :(. She's not been bad today - other than harassing my mum whilst mucking out :p - but polo was in all day due to the vile weather.
So has anyone got any suggestions to keep a horse calm and preoccupied whilst on box rest?
Ideas so far:
- Carrots in haynet
- A swede
- Likit
- Possibly get a mirror?
Horses sure can make you stress a lot sometimes!

Big bucket of soaked sugar beet/high fibre cubes?
Treat ball
Apples in a water bucket
Radio on for company (Not all of them like it, worth a try though.)

Thanks for all those :) I hadnt thought of a radio, might be tricky as there is no plug anywhere near her stable but ill give it a go . She does not like sugar beet as i found out whilst she was at the vets, but i can try fast fibre instead, only thing i worry with this is she's going to gobble it all to fast (normally quite greedy ;)) but at least she'll have eaten !

My horse was on box rest for months 2 yrs ago. You could try ...

'play nets' rather than hay nets with carrots etc hid inside.
Nut ball / swedes to eat
Radio on classic fm. We bought one of the portable ones you use in the shower - worked really well.
Hay nets in different corners; hay in one, Hage in the other etc.
Ready grass.
Fibre blocks.
