the book is not wrong, my boy has got sweet itch, to be expected considering the size of his mane and the amount of flies we are struggling. literally just starting out, can anyone recommend where to get a ECONOMICALLY PRICED sweet itch rug please. ebay not coming up trumps, local tack shop in excess of £100. thanks

Most sweetitch rugs are probably going to be over the £100 mark to be honest, unless you can get a good cheap second hand one..?
My friend had a horse with sweetich, but due to lack of funds she couldnt afford to buy a proper sweetich rug. She had alot of success with a good fly rug with hood and face mask, and lots of fly repellent. The itching stopped and the mane grew back.
Not sure on the make though im afraid, might be worth shopping around for a fly rug made with a good hardy material..
Only thing I can suggest im afraid... Bloody sweet-itch its horrible to have a horse who suffers with it

Hi, My mare has sweet itch and we survive using a Premier equine fly rug and face mask, plus when out riding lots of fly repellent in the gel/cream form as she hates spray!!!! I also feed her garlic in her feed (only feed her to make sure she gets the garlic) she also has parsley, linseed and garlic oil from the Feel Good 30 range - Good luck with your boy.

My friend has a weatherbeeta fly rug (£50) for her sweetitch affected cob which is very good, she also uses some special cream which is very effective, can't remember what it's called but i think it's made by Nettex, will look at the yard tomorrow if you want!

paintedlucky - brilliant thanks about the cream, others have also mentioned this today so i bought a stick of it to test at 7pound instead of a tub at 23pound cos im buying so many lotions n potions at the mo. also i have a brand new wetherbeeta fly rug (never used) and was going to try this but others have said the mites still get in through the holes but think i will try until i get another. been looking at the mentioned premier equine rugs, sweet itch buster, any views> will now look at derby house and look forward to an update please abb123!
