Hi, i wouldnt normally post anything like this, but id quite like an explanation as to whats going on, its obviously somthing that happens yearly i would think and i think it is in Spain

Ive just come across this video on youtube and was quite horrified at what i saw, it appears these ponies are herded into a type of corall, the foals are then viciously seperated from their mothers. Then men and women jump on the backs of these poor frightend animals and pull them to the ground while others cut of their tails and mane, it is horrible

Heres the video for anyone who wants to have a look.
Its not nice, the foals have already been seperated, so you wont see that part unless you flick through the other videos on there.

I believe the title translates as Taming the Beasts. It's Portuguese.

I found a description:

"In the region of Galicia in the northwest of Spain, the age old practice of "Taming the Beasts" is thought to date back to the Bronze Age. Today, local communities maintain their own secrets and traditions with regard to the "Rapa", which takes place in rural areas from June onwards. The real Rapa is unlikely to be witnessed, but many towns hold a formalised version of the event as a celebration of ancient tradition, for the benefit of local people and visitors. Livestock owners round up their horses from the wilds of the sierra and bring them to the appointed "curro" or corral. The most expert handlers, called "agarradores", each grapple with a wild horse until it is sufficiently subdued for its mane to be trimmed and its hide to be branded. At the end of affairs, the crowd adjourns to celebrate in boisterous fiesta style"

Dunno...I saw some pretty fluffy tails in there..

"fluffy" tails can still be evident in 18 mth/20 mth ponies...hardly foals...

MASSIVE tradition, and yes, hideously dangerous for the humans! I *think*, if I remember rightly, that it has to do with ownership of horses too. No harm is done, lets face it, man against beast...who is heavier?! No whips, sticks or chains allowed, just age old horsemanship. It may look crude these days, but it goes back centuries.

Sick - The fact they have been subjected to trauma does not make it alright, or that it is a tradition. It used to be tradition for a suspected thief to hold a hot poker if he came out in blisters he was deemed guilty & dealt with. Oh & what about the tradition to burn witches at the stake. Traditions are not always good & those poor ponies were terrified, look at their eyes & their body language.

no different than the foals who are separated during the drifts in the New Forest???????

Nothing wrong with branding if it is done properly and the brand is hot enough.

Jesus, horses don't get tamed by saying "come here horsey, horsey", they are animals with their own minds, sometimes *ugly* things happen. No horses were injured, none ever are!

oh right, I didnt realise that they were actually jumped on and ridden by young lads and dragged out of the corall by their tails, by others

ah, but you didnt actually SAY that in your OP.......

but having said that, sometimes the nearest thing to grab hold of, when dealing with foals/youngstock, is the tail......

I grab my horses tails if they move away from me and I want them back - never had a prob with that LOL!

And Dottie, you look as tho you have a Welshie - do you know how he/she came to be tamed?

exactly!

and as for your second paragraph........i agree...an average horse weighs 450kgs.....i'm damn sure it could inflict alot more damage to a human than vice-versa....

and there's no need to 'tame' them like that either.

How many foals have you handled? Ever tried restraining a recalcitrant one for the farrier?

QR - Goodness the tree huggers are out tonight - I do wonder how many of them have handled wild youngstock?

Why do these posts always have to become 'tree huggers' verses the rest posts!!
I don't imagine many people have really handled wild youngstock but I have and I wouldn't dream of handling them that way unless as a last resort and thats never happened yet...
