not babies at 24 months.....they are working animals by then...i have driving ponies that are harness broken at 20 months..Tia has Trail horses broken at 24 months...i see no "babies" here...

"we" and i use that term VERY loosely here, in England, have a very rose-coloured outlook when it comes to beasts of burden...because in 90% of the world, THAT is what they are...NOT pampered pets...

who the hell are "we".... the so-called "animal-loving" country in the civilised world, which still has a very high rate of horse abuse/neglect/cruelty through lammi/over feeding/over rugging/ponies kept in the dark to "keep" their coat for showing/horses and ponies that have less than 48hrs turnout per week etc etc... to tell others how to treat their animals??

HOW dare "we" take the moral high ground when "we" in england cannot keep a tight ship??

smacks of hypocrasy to me..................

I can only assume that a lot of people on this thread haven't had a whole lot to do with semi-feral/young ponies before if they are seeing this as cruel. I personally don't see anything cruel about it - the ponies aren't being hurt in any way. Just injured pride perhaps and that has to happen one day if they are to make good riding ponies.
 
Ive actually had most of my horses from foals, some of which hadnt been handled, ive never treated any of them in that way and have never had a peoblem with them regarding anything ive asked them.
I Appriciate that this sort of thing happens but it dosnt mean i have to like it. Its just no the way i am.
I defianatly dont agree with very young foals being ridden and treated that way.

Different country - different culture. So long as no harm is done then I can't see why the big deal?

I don't treat any of my horses like this but that doesn't mean it is wrong for others to do this.

If it was just randomly done by yobs to a field full of horses then no

But this has a purpose

I lived in Sri Lanka and saw far worse things happen to horses

I can't see the need for that either.

All very well grabbing and holding onto them, but jumping on them and wrestling them to the ground? Why?

Quite! They are no walk in the park! I almost lost a finger with one I got a couple of years ago when I was trying to get the halter on her, and she is just a teeny thing! She's now 3, riding out quietly and a little star.

yep...because i'd be the doing it...with OH of course....only coz he's got the muscle!!

as i said in my previous answer, for my Newfies....it gets all the nasty stuff..ie headcoller/worming/AB's all over and done with in ONE hit....we "crush" them to acheive the above...takes about 5 minutes per pony.......then its all over and done with...and forgotten.

then the nice stuff begins....
 
honeypots - I can assure you that the macho behaviour does not continue throughout their life. Once rounded and claimed they are then treated with respect (more often than not). This is a snapshot of a macho tradition, a moment in time so to speak.

JM - you may have to clarify 'crushing' your foals..... I know exactly what you mean, as that is how recalcitrant/naughty foals are handled on studs for the farrier/bloods taken/worming etc...

I was thinking more along the lines of a crush. Yes, its still not their choice at first but there's alot less thashing and therefore potential injury and stress..

I have time on my side as I buy them as babies and keep them till their 3rd or 4th year.....however I do always have the same as you in the worming and halter breaking issues....and yes they can be strong little sods even when you have taken a lot of time over them.

You see bad planning this year on my part meant that I wasn't able to use my crush as I placed my 5 wild ones in a field which does not bound on the corral with the crush in it. I admit one of mine, I found incredibly tedious, getting all the worming and stuff done with it. There were many times when I wished I had the crush next to their field

having taken your thoughts onboard, then yes, we are not too dissimilar..

i have 1 x rising 4 yr old 2 x rising 2 yr olds...all with "quirks"..................who will be here till i deem otherwise...
