distressing video, can anyone tell me what the hell they are doing

Not my way of doing things either but I still don't class it as cruelty.

I could probably film shearing time and show the 'terror' in the eyes of the sheep and the noise and dogs barking and could make it look equally cruel..but it isn't!

Whilst I would prefer not to do things this way, I don't object, they are not being hurt.
I would like to know how the objectors would handle things if they had huge numbers of wild horses and a short time to sort them. During their lifetine, most horses will suffer from a very stressful situation, but few are pshycologically(sp) damaged long term,

Anyhow, those are carrot sticks! Anyone feel better now

I have never seen the NF ponies treated in that way, ie being jumped on then continually slapped. I have never seen them pulled around like that either & yet they have to deal with as many in the sales. No one knows what suffering they are going through or what damage is being done by being wrestled in that way. Do you really think not one of those animals is going to come out unscathed? Did you not see the way some of them had their necks twisted? Sorry stick by my first opinion, & we dont have a right to treat animals in that way. What is seen there is not right, & nothing anyone says is going to convience me otherwise.

I agree, but New Forest ponies are not really wild most of them are actually at least halter broken at some point and are well used to being handled. Of course the foals aren't when first rounded up but they just follow their mums. They also have a very placid temperament which means that once the foal is weaned it's not that hard to put a halter on them and halter break them very quickly.

I have not watched the video so don't knwo how it compares but just wanted to point out that New Forest ponies are far from wild!
 
Well on my mums yard we had four NF that were partially halter broken and another four that have never been near a halter they came straight off the moors and my mum wouldn't think twice about tackling to get the halter on them. No sometimes it is not always needed to tackle them but if its a matter of time then the quickest way possible is to tackle them and get the job done. There are three at the yard who have all had the tackling done to them and you could actually do things to them and within a matter of a week they were leading out and quiet. IMHO this is only a experience that last for about five minutes and is soon forgotten otherwise why would they still come to you
 
Im very surprised that those men werent kicked ....shame they were'nt is all I can say. The Spanish on general are cruel to animals. They stone donkeys and do bull fighting, killing animals is just a kick for them, and they justify it by saying its 'tradtion' .So this video unfortunetly does'nt surprise me. How is wrestling youngsters to the ground a tradition? Its just not needed. So come on anti tree huggers your obviously going to throw something back at me!
 
Ruggers this is no different to roping a wild animal and hog tying it for branding or medical treatment.

I suspect what most people are objecting to is the fact that this is a spectacle.

These horses, ponies and foals are preyed on by wild cats in exactly the same way as they are brought down by these 'riders and i for one have sat on a number of horses heads and necks to keep them on the floor. the horse gets up, has a shake and goes off to graze.

Take a look around the horses actually being singled out, the majority of the others are actually very calm, if there was real percieved danger the whole lot would be going absolutely mental.

Ok its not nice to watch but you have to try and look at these things with a different mind set sometimes.
 
Sadly we could say that about many practices around the world however most of them are based on necessity for swift results.

I truly dont think the majority of these horses suffer any lasting damage either mental or physical.

I think for those of us that have seen and worked with wild ponies the scenes shown in the video (I haven't watched the weaning one) aren't quite so distressing as those people who haven't had that sort of exposure, but those of us that have had the exposure shouldn't label others who find the scenes distressing as 'tree huggers', I think that is a little unfeeling towards them be honest.

I have worked with wild ponies straight off the hills (granted in this country not abroad) and things can be done quickly without the need to bring down what looked liked a relatively calm pony in the first place, I couldn't really see what was to be gained with that little display but the chaps didn't really pursue it for too long as the pony was calm enough to brand standing up, don't see the mane triming as an issue.

I realise that these scenes are distressing to others and I'm not going to preach to you, but there are a lot worse things going on with horses than what these boys displayed, yes an annual meeting and splitting up of mares and foals, but I have seen very distressed foals weaned from their dams and shut in a stable with both top and bottom doors shut so they can't see a thing, at least here they are still in a herd. It was for a very short time for each pony to injure, I think all the shouting made it seem a lot worse and the fact it took 7 men/boys to grab it, if it had been two guys and they didn't try and get it to the floor the whole scene wouldn't have seemed too bad - I suppose
