I have a rising 5 year old (16.2 TB type) who was lightly backed last year, turned away for 11 months and has been back in work for 6 weeks now: 3 days a week we do 1 hours worth of very hilly roadwork at walk with some 1 or 2 minute trots added in now. And she's also lunged once or twice a week when I cannot ride, for 15 to 20 mins at walk and trot BUT she will burst into canter occasionally and I notice she always chooses to canter the few strides in a disunited gait. If she does take off correctly she'll inevitably buck and switch to disunited. I stress I do not wish her to canter on the lunge but she's a highly strung sort and even the introduction of a single trotting pole to walk over is enough to get her hot and bothered until she's settled down a bit. She'll strike off into canter once or twice during a session and is brought back into trot and walk within 1 or 2 circuits at the very most. Physically she is looking well muscled and she is working well to build a decent top line. My question is, will she 'grow out of' cantering disunited as she matures and we start cantering more on the flat under saddle. Obviously, I am a little concerned this habit of finding the disunited gait more comfortable on a 25m circle will start stick and be hard to break. I haven't cantered her under saddle yet as we lack anywhere suitable ATM. Reassurance needed.
