Anyone had problems with their horse disuniting in canter?

My mare has been struggling with her canter for quite a while, she always strikes off fine but then changes lead behind! Only on the right rein! Had all the usual checked, saddle, teeth, back ect, done loads of uphill work to build her muscles & done loads of Pessoa work as told it could be a balancing issue! She only used to do it on the lunge but now does it ridden! :(

She now has other symptoms such has lack of impulsion from behind, saddle slipping to the right (like she's shifting the weight), irritable to saddle her!

Vets seem at a loss so she's off the Newmarket soon for investigations!

Anyone have had similar symptoms and what was the outcome? I'm thinking possible sacroiliac problems/kissing :(:(:(

Mine did this occasionally (and I mean occasionally) got better the fitter she was, but turns out he had an SI injury, kissing spines t6 - t10 and severe facet joint arthritis. She was PTS after over 6 months trying to convince the vets there was something wrong with her. Chiro said she was fine. Has yours had a bone scan or x rays?

She's going to Newmarket a wk on Monday so will probably have a bone scan then! We know she has some damage to her left hind suspensory but after a course of shockwave treatment she showed only slight improvement! I have heard that suspensory & sacroiliac problems tend to go hand in hand :(

Possible symptom of a bone spavin.

Ensure you are not trying to overbend to the inside and are not allow the quarters to swing out - especially as she is not doing it on the lunge.

Thanks Ruth83, hocks have been blocked and there was no improvement, so vets don't suspect bone spavins but I guess X-rays are the only way to rule that out! As I said in my post symptoms first started on the lunge and now she also does it when being ridden! She does it with or without rider and with other jockeys so its not a rider error! If only they could talk eh??

yes my pony does this as does my gelding

Apologies, misread your first post to mean she did it only when ridden (it has been a loooong day!).

Does she do it when 'free', so free schooling or in the field? Might be interesting to add that factor to the equation?

No worries! ;) yes she does it when I've free schooled her and I've seen her do it in the field, she only does it on the right lead and always strikes off correctly but changes behind after a few strides - almost like she trying to take the weight off her outside hind, her canter also feels quite stiff/stilted!

Mine did that with a spavin, just diagnosed. Now has question mark over poss KS but restarted and improved so far, reluctant to poke too much.

We have a horse here that does exactly that. Vet thought it was his hocks as there was some improvement when he was blocked. But has now had them medicated and is worse than ever. He has started to show a resentment of the saddle and will not engage his back end. Will buck even in walk if you take up the contact and put the leg on. It's very frustrating. Vet is back to see him next week.

Hi Wagtail, sorry to hear your having the similar problems :( it is very frustrating! My mare has never bucked or anything but she struggles to use her hind quarters, we even did a bute trial with her and she was no better! It's like it more of a restriction rather than a pain issue! Well we are off to Newmarket week after nxt so I will let you know their findings! I really hope we get to the bottom of it one way or another!

I hope you do get to the bottom of it. I will be very interested to know what the problem is. We also did a bute trial and he was no better.
