The grass in my mares paddock is going to run out before they move paddocks. so I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to feed hay out in the field

I want to minimise wastage and unfortunately cant use a net on a post like i have done previously

So any ideas?

Thank you

Recycling container - they even have a section you can leave out at the bottom so horse eats the old hay first and you fill from the top. And they are subsidised if you buy it from the council! - heres mine ....I have cable tied it to the fence posts as we are in a very gale prone location!

and it is recycling - the manure resulting is excellent fertiliser for the garden!

Don't make a feeder from pallets! That's what I did and I was so proud... Then they broke it into little pieces. I'm so sad about it!!

Suggest a blue barrel cut in half?

Or tractor tyre?

We feed round bales, bought a cheap tarpaulins, but strong enough, tie it with rope through the mental eyes through either end leaving a gap for eating at one end and bobs your uncle! Your very own cheap bale buddy! :)

Travel mad, I was looking at getting a composter too. I was going to attach it to a fence. Ill just take the little door off and it should work ok and you can get ones form the local council for cheap. I thought Id get a couple so my mare had to keep on the move a bit.

Can someone tell me if this would work?

On grounds that wheelie bins are expensive could I use composters with bottom door removed?

You can often source wheelie bins (reconditioned ones) for sale for £30. They do have the advantage that you can easily fill with a whole bale and wheel into place. That is all I paid for each of mine - I have 5 :)

I looked at the wheelie bin idea too and saw someone selling them for sixty quid on ebay. Ridonkulous! Then I got to thinking I could do that myself but then I wondered where I could get some because I dont think my neighbours would be happy if I stole theirs for the winter. Anyway I just thought the composters are cheap and I dont have to do any cutting or hammering just a bit of tying!
