Hello, Long time no see.

OH has finally decided I can have a horse once I have saved up for one. So looking at about 2 years ish which should give me time to start riding again as I gave up in August because we were house hunting.

So anyway one of the conditions of me having a horse is that I keep it on DIY or rent a field. So I was looking for information on how long you spend at the yard a day if you are DIY and roughly the costs you pay for livery.

Thanks in advance.

lotsof time and money lolx
my oh is gobsmacked and another parent asked me yesterday if i actually live at yard? lol in fact i have just bought another horse and i am particularly a worrier to so i have been at yard almost 24/7 for the last week since she arrived. i am officially having a night off hee hee. money is different! depends on lots of different things, but it is truly a worthwhile commitment x

My horse is a 20 min walk to the field and back so i end up spending an hr if not riding and a couple of hours or more if riding. she's currently on grass livery at £235 per month (i know it's expensive but i live in surrey and i can't get cheaper round here it's a nightmare!), I don't move her onto DIY for two reasons, one being the cost and the other the time it would take me to muck out, ride and go to that field so many times a day! She's happy out anyway.

When I had Jake on loan he was in a closer field and on assisted DIY. This was £270 a month and included a stable and shared field with turnout or bring in at one end of the day only, ab lib hay in field and stable. Aquamax bedding was £6.50 a bag and as he was tiny we managed on 1 a month (that's a mean feat most people use at least 1 a week on an established bed). Then there's feed on top and shoes.

I recon if I had Indie on DIY now she would cost me a minimum of £350 a month in surrey.

'ella19'----omg! glad i live in scotland!! i am only 115 per month for diy, with stable bedding and all hay included and with haylage in field in winter!
p.s. you forgot to metion worming, dentist, injections, insurance (god why do we do it?) and the list goes on oh and feed xx

Hello! How exciting, getting a new horse!
My horse is on DIY livery in north Leeds and I pay around £150 per month which includes field, stable, straw and haylage(of variable quality unfortunately). We also have a couple of sand arenas and access to good hacking.
I spend far too much time with the horse. I'm sure your OH will learn to add an extra half hour or more on to your ETA home!

Hi, I'm in Somerset so I think a way from you but I pay £60 per month for DIY, that includes stable along with grazing. My yard is pretty rough and ready, but the stables are huge and the people are nice, yard owner is good and although he's getting on a bit, does what he can and is happy for us to sort the rest.

I spend about 30 minutes there in a morning on my way to work to feed, then between 1-2 hours in the evening. My boy is only 2 so no riding but I do take him for regular walks. Not sure if this helps though

we currently pay approx £100/month for stable, turnout, indoor and outdoor schools -then haylage, straw, feed, farrier etc etc - works out at approx £50/horse/week inc livery so £200/month per horse in total

When I had 2 horses on DIY and was working, it took approx an hour in the morning, half an hour in the evening plus riding time....

now we have more horses and I live on the yard, then it takes all day :)

Hi, It's £25 a week DIY at my yard and that includes stable, field (all year turnout) Outdoor School and 250 acres of off road hacking. They charge £5 to use the x-country course, £5 to use the Show jumps and £5 for 1.5hrs of the indoor school (to be used anytime that week)

Huge bales of Hay, Straw & Haylege are delivered to your stable Hay £25, Straw £20, Haylege £30 and each one lasts one horse approx 1 month.

We have an on site Farrier and he charges £20 a trim and £65 a full set of shoes.

Wormer is on a yard rota so everyone is done at the same time and costs around £14.

I go down twice a day to turnout & muck out in the morning which takes about an hour and then after work to bring in, feed, poo pick (in the summer) and groom. Mine is only 21 months so no riding but i'm down there approx an hour and a half at night.
In the winter the YO brings him in before it gets dark charging £1.50 otherwise i nip out from work at lunch to get him in so another half hour.

Oh yes insurance - mine is approx £35 a month.

In total approx 2.5 to 3hrs a day depending on the time of year.

Cost approx £250 a month all in

My yard is 19 miles from my home but only 5 miles away from my work so Monday to Friday it's an easy commute.

Some places are cheaper and other more expensive and all yards offer different tings in with the price so worth phoning around to get what you need from your livery :)

I pay £25 a week for stable, barn space for storage of rugs etc, school with lights and use of lots of jumps, paddocks (everyone gets 2 to rotate as they like), tracks to ride on, a few XC jumps and okish hacking. Straw is £2.50 a bale (small), and YO's own hay is £5 a bale.

I pay £23/week for stable (all year round) that includes turnout, morning and lunch time feeds (mon-fri) and just breakfast at weekends, use of indoor and outdoor school, and both summer tunrout in field and winter in sand paddocks.
Then £10 a week hay (in winter when in full time) Drops to £5 while they go out half days then nothing when out 24hr
£3.25 a bale of straw
£5.50-7.50 shavings (depending on type)
£15 a month roughly on feed in winter (too fat for feed in summer!)

Then wormers, vets, farrier and insurance on top

I have 2 horses so in winter am usually there minimum of 3 hrs each night - longer at weekend as I have no life beyond horses :o

Depends on what work I am doing with them
Avr weekday in winter (arrive approx 5pm - 1 hr to do both beds and haynets, half hour grooming, 1 and half hours for riding both (less if lunging) then have feeds to do, sweep up, put everything away, get home past 8!)

in summer, they live out 24hr so its a case of either nip down, check they all have a leg on each corner and go, or bring in, groom, rest them, ride/hack and chuck back out so can be anything from half an hour or the more likely 1 and half-2 hrs.

Hope you get what youre looking for x

I pay £120 per month for two stables and 3 acres of land with water and electric. 5 miles to stables (15mins), then feed and poo pick (30mins) in the summer. Go back after work and feed and poo pick (30mins). In the winter it takes about 45mins in the morning to muck out both stables, change rugs and turn out. I have to bring them in myself as it is a self contained yard with no others. Have to buy and transport bedding and hay/haylage.
No school but really good hacking.
