DIY inner rug fix

looking for recommendations on how to DIY fix the inside lining of turnout rugs.
My mare doesn’t seem to tear the outside but splits the inside - so I don’t really want to send it away to spend a fortune on fixing it when I feel I could probably fix the inside myself?
i was just wandering if anybody has done this and if it’s better to glue or stitch? What fabric is best and where to obtain some? As she isn’t a rug wrecker I don’t have any donor rugs to use!

any advice is much appreciated! Thank you ?

The challenge would be not creating anything that rubs. I can stitch rips or glue a silky patch over. But tricky on an inner lining as a hard patch of glue or stitching will rub.

Sadly due to owning large destructive wb I always have a plentiful supply of donor rugs so usually just use some similar fabric from another rug. Failing that I will cut up some item of clothing which is on its last legs typically having come to me from a charity shop or ebay anyway. I think stitching is normally better if the lining is a thicker material but I have also successfully used glue, especially when the lining is that wafer thin nylon stuff. I wouldn't bother just stitching up the rips without a patch as they just rip again due to the material being weakened at the edges or being pulled tighter than it was originally. There are some absolutely shocking totally trashed potential donor rugs for sale so you might be able to get one for a couple of quid or ask your mates locally etc.

Wonderweb/Hemmingweb has worked well for me. Or I buy one of those silky bib thingies when they are on for cheap and use them as patching stock - again fastened with web as I am lazy terrible at sewing.

I have stitched linings if it is a clean tear with no chunks missing. Pull the edges together and turn a small hem inwards on each edge. Using waxed saddlery thread and a strong/upholstery needle, use a ladder stitch along the folded edges. Works for the outer rips and tears too.
Maybe check that your surcingles are not loose - sounds as if she is standing on the rug when she gets up.

Not particularly clean as long as the surface is dry. All of mine held in place for ages. It's waterproof so I used it on turnouts too. Luckily my current horses are more careful than my old one so not had to use in a while haha.
