Having always been on full livery I am curious to know how much I could save if I was DIY.
Can anyone give me some costs for keeping a horse between 16.2 and 17 hands on DIY. Please include costs of bedding, hay feed etc. I would be in the Essex area so any info on costs relative to the area would be great as I know the cost of hay and bedding can vary in different areas.

I have a 16.1hh mare on DIY livery in Buckingham and it's £130.00 per month. This includes:
Huge stable
Unlimited Hay & Straw
Outdoor school
Indoor lunging pen
Horse walker
Show jumps & a few x country jumps
Own paddock
Lockable tack shed
Reasonable hacking

I am, and have been on many DIY yards in kent. I am assuming the costs would be similar to that of Essex!!

Livery- just stable, field, facilities around £20-35, some yards in my area do DIY with Hay (not debatable on some yards, their hay only to be used) as they grow their own and they are more like £35-40.
Can then obviously add brng in/turnout for a cost at most yards.

Bedding- I used straw last year, that was £2 per bale. This year I am on shavings and I am paying £8.30 bale

Hay- £3-4.50 per bale. If you look in local magazines there seems to be a lot advertised for the £3-3.50 mark

Feed- would assume about the same as anywhere else!

Not sure what else would differ in different area's, but there is a rough idea! :)

I'll give you the cost of the current one and last one. Based Southeast border:

Current:
£120 a month incl unlimited straw.
Includes stable and all year 24/7 turnout if we want it.
Use of floodlit school.
Hay £30 a month when he is in at night (most people I know pay £40 - £50).

Old:
£140 a month. Stable and all year turnout, 24/7 in summer. 8-5 winter.
Indoor, 2 x outdoor, walker, xc field.
Bedding @ £8 a bale, 2 bales per week.
Hay £30 a month (yard now offers £55 extra per month for adlib hay/haylage but most buy direct from farmers so get it cheaper).

Most places round me charge an average of £30 - £45 a week. Not many I know include hay or bedding and in most cases I have found that this is only the more affordable option (re hay) if you cant shop around to buy your own direct from farmers. Those who buy hay from feed merchants pay between £5 - £8 a bale in which case then yes when its included its cheaper. I buy a huge bale (equiv to 10 small bales) for £30. This lasts me about 2 months now as my horse is out, is naturally a fatty and still has good grass.

I charge £125 PCM for DIY inc. stable/turnout/use of school. I supply good quality haylage which works out at £30 - £45 per month for ad lib - depending on how much horses are in/out. I will turnout or bring in 4 or 5 times a month as a helpful goodwill gesture with no charge and I feed every morning mon -fri at about 6.30am so liveries generally arrive to find breakfast finished and horses ready to turnout. One of the liveries and i take it in turns to feed at weekends so everyone gets chance of a lay in.

This is in Essex :-)

I,m in epping forest we have great hacking but limited turnout in the winter.
I pay 40 per week rent, use of school
6 per bale of hay
3.25 bale of straw all supplied by the yard
Pay extra if staff doing turnouts

I am in Buckinghamshire and DIY is around 35 a week which includes stable, all year round turnout, floodlit school, but does not include bedding or hay. Hacking is pretty good round here too. Some yards have xc course, indoor school or lunging pen but tend to be a bit more expensive.

I was paying 35/week + 30/month for haylage in winter + pellets bedding 10/week

now I pay 17/week + pellets bedding 5/every other month as out 24/7 but keep my stable bedded up + 2.50/month hay just for stable/trailer.

Both have schools, the more expensive one was floodlit, both have toilets (v important!) & current place has parking for my trailer.

I am a vv lucky lady.

I pay 110 for stable/ huge school with lights (don't have to pay extra), and storage for hay/bedding & tack room. Nice grazing & only a few in each field which I like.
Shavings is around £7-£8 a bale, but going to try him on pellets which are about £5-£6. Hay I pay £5 for a small bale or around £35 foR a big round one. :)
