I was thinking as I mucked out this morning just how much exercise I get mucking/skipping/poo picking/carting/carrying, etc., so I thought for fun I'd start a thread extolling the physical/health-giving virtues of taking care of a horse . . .

Mucking out - good for triceps and core muscles
Carrying water buckets - works those biceps
Pushing full barrow up muck heap - works glutes and thigh muscles
Forking up muck - works core muscles and triceps
Poo picking - core muscles, lower back and triceps
Hauling heavy/wet haynets out of soaking trough - core muscles, biceps and triceps
Hanging up said heavy haynet - biceps and core muscles

Anything else?

Develop your multitasking skills when you're in a rush.

Develop your social skills when you have to see people you may not like every single day.

Develop concentration skills when you decide to sieve through a big shavings bed determined to get every.single.turd.

Good for the skin and the lungs being out in the fresh air :D

Sweeping-good for stomach/core muscles. Grooming- good for arm muscles.
Seeing my horse twice a day, good for my mental health
Plus for kids & teens an excellent way to learn responsibility & gain some independence, & social skills.

It is definitely better than the gym all the exercise plus fresh air, but the other reason it is good is because on bigger yards it allows you to socialise with like minded people good for mental well being :)

All the above and also develpes an unlimited tolerance for trying to catch playful ponies staying just out of reach during the torrential rain at bringing in time.

Been told thats good for the soul

It's good for your time keeping, but not so much your personal hygiene - I had to muck out two stables between 6.30am and 7am this morning, but didn't have time to shower before work :o

Scent of ammonia from wet patches of bed clears the nasal cavities better than any decongestant when you have a cold ;)

It MAKES me get up and go do something twice a day, seven days a week. It's my routine, and it's really good for helping to keep me (sometimes) sane - the repetition, the making sure everything's "as it should be", the healthy glow on my lad. :o:o

Alma - so sorry for however that happened x

I agree that they force you up and out, I wouldn't leave the house somedays if it wasn't for my mare.

I have lost nearly two and a half stone in weight since buying my youngster, and not fully trained up for riding yet. Also lost a lot af stiffness and aches and pains.

Alma so sorry to hear about your husband big hugs to you.

For the person who said time keeping whilst I agree it makes you good at getting things done quickly when you have a deadline however with a more loose deadline i am always late! Eg if I say to my husband I'll be back at 12.30 he knows it will be 1 at the earliest!

Some of us are on the show side of condition because we are so busy doing what needs to be done to keep our horses happy we don't have time to sit down and eat chicken and salad so we grab a burger and a mars bar to keep us going.
