We have three loose boxes that lie empty for most of the year on our livestock farm, eldest son sees a potential for DIY livery - what could we charge, providing hay and possible 24/7 turnout? Quiet lanes for hacking. And what would DIY ers require? We are on the borders of Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire.

Sounds like a nice quiet set up for someone.

Top of my head I think most DIY ers would require:

*access to water
*possibly power (although not essential)
*some storage for rugs, wheelbarrows, grooming kits, feed etc
*Decent fencing (ideally post and rail/ electric )
*Decent grazing at least one acre per horse and maybe more if they are going to stay out 24/7

You would also need to think about a muck heap location, insurances, responsibility of maintaining fields etc

For very basic DIY you are probably looking at between £15 to £20 per week per stable. I'm not sure of the going rates in your area . You can make extra by selling straw and hay on top and maybe charging extra for horsebox or trailer storage if you have the space.

Hi I've just moved to the area and looking to get some lessons. I've done my PC C+ and previously competed up to 1.15m. I've only hacked my mums horse the past few years and would like to get back into it as I've lost my nerve a bit jumping. I don't want any plods or really lessons of people who haven't done that much as although I'm rusty I can ride. Any ideas? I've looked at berriewood but its a bit far. any reccomendations?

The other option is to rent the stables and land as a whole.
That way one person is responsible for the management of the yard. It's easier to deal with one person than three.
As to the amount that should be paid, that all depends on what other facilities are available e.g. electric, acreage, hacking. I used to pay a set rate regardless of the amount of horses kept, as long as the land was managed.
I used to fix fencing, install water pipes and anything that needed doing.
