Hi,
I’ve recently secured some lovely student accommodation (that has its own private yard DIY livery on-site!) for my 2nd year as a Hartpury uni student. The house rent price is very reasonable but I’m a bit unsure about the livery costs, as it is around £255 a month - this is for a 20x60 outdoor arena, bedding, hay, a stable and turnout field. I personally think it is worth it considering my horse will be able to be on my doorstep, but I’m just wondering is this price normal for the Glos area? I’m still not 100% familiar with the horsey prices down there, as a yard like that where I live would be £100-£150 a month so it’s a lot more expensive than my ‘norm’.
Probably should mention that the horse in question I do not own yet. I had made arrangements to buy him but then coronavirus got in the way, so instead I’ve made plans with the owner to buy him after lockdown is over.
I know I’ll be able to afford it (I’m a full-time student with a part-time job at a pub on weekends) as I’ll be paying for absolutely everything for this horse myself so have calculated the finances. I’ve had horses before but they were kept very cheaply and were not solely my responsibility (I was very lucky that my parents paid for farrier and dentistry before, but they can no longer afford to do so with my next horse) so I’m conscious that it’s likely I will not have much extra money left over per month, after all the expenditure on my horse and my own living costs.
For fellow uni students with horses - how are you managing & affording it?
Also for those who live in the Gloucester area: is the price stated above, about average DIY livery cost for the area? I’m still not used to everything being slightly more expensive there haha.
Thank you!
