DIY livery yard hay prices

Slightly OT but I do wonder how some YO make a profit. I've just paid over £400 for fertiliser and minerals for my 5 acres. Then there weill be other costs involved with hay making. Last year this worked out at over £2 a bale including the fertiliser; And then there's fences to mend, building maintenance, water rates etc etc. At £25 a week for DIY livery it hardly seems worth it.

We pay per day and as long as we don't waste it can use as much as we want - £1.78 per horse per day. We always have the same excellent quality haylage too. Summer during full turnout you have to supply your own if you want it :)

I've been paying £80 pcm for adlib haylage for my horse that is turned away 24/7.

Yes it's expensive - but it saves me a hell of a lot of hassle - my horse has lived out 24/7, unrugged and with no hard feed the whole if this awful winter. No haying rota to deal with, no ordering or storage to deal with (all done by YO). He has come out fatter than the start of winter unfortunately!

This is interesting.

We pay a flat rate of £40 per month, per horse, regardless of what you use. Great if you've got a poor doer that has ad-lib. Not so good when you're weighing out for a good doer.

Didn't read all the posts but I had the same issue with my new YO - first month the bill was over twice as much as I had anticipated.

So, I managed a way to buy my own hay. I talked to the vet, asked for her help. She went to the YO and told her the hay was no good for my horse and that she had to have a specific one. Then I went to the YO and started with a very complicated story of how the special hay had to come from far, so I had to order a lot, so probably was easier to keep it at home and just bring it in bale by bale.

It worked out for me. Mind you, just going to her and ask her to sort the issue out was not an option as I had already had a falling out with her for charging over 3 times more for Alfa A.
