DIY Livery?

I just can't understand why people would have horses, if they can't afford to pay someone to look after them properly on full livery?
It's not as if the average horse owner has any qualifications to enable them to recognise illness/formulate rations etc.
Thoughts?

I heard about you, the forum character!

You 'heard' about me?

What did you hear? I am sure it was lies. Was it that Canadanadian woman again, Tia? She fancies me.

Hehehe...Shilasdair is trouble!

I'd never pay to have someone else look after my horse, I enjoy the relationship building from the ground, it helps you get a better understanding of your horse for ridden work.

The average horse owner may not have any qualifications but far too many qualifications involve no practical work, its all paper work! Theres no better form of education than getting your hands dirty and doing it yourself.

Thats my 5p worth!

It's 'I'm the only person that can handle my horse' syndrome.

Most people's horses would die if left in the care of someone else.

No, you're sort of the livery equivalent of either a cross-dresser or a hermaphrodite.
Hope this helps.

Those DIYers are a disgrace

Do you think the average groom has the qualifications "necessary" to look after the horses better than the owners...?
tongue.gif

Then again I am a results sheet away from my equine degree and I can still be a numpty at times (/most of the time)

What if someone works on a full livery yard looking after other peoples horses (therefore this is someone that you are saying is "qualified" to look after them) and keeps their own horse on DIY. Where do the come in to it???

There are statistics that a significant number of horses kept on DIY every year will not survive....it's a disgrace.

I can sense the mood you are in tonight Shils. It must be something in the air as I logged on tonight to see if there was a good debate I could get involved in!
Good to know I'm not the only one feeling a bit argumentative !

Clearly, when employed in a professional capacity, you are perfectly capable of making objective, rational decisions and are therefore qualified to provide an excellent full livery service. When looking after your own DIY horse, you become emotional and subjective - your decisions are (falsely) coloured by your feelings, thus putting your horse/s' welfare at risk.
Surely that is obvious?

I do pay someone to look after PF and they're RUBBISH!! Certainly not as diligent or careful as me!
I always tack groom and tack PF up myself. I don't consider mucking out to be a bonding exercise, and I'd rather be riding, so I leave that to the grooms.

Shilasdair I think you are probably quite evil. If that makes you proud I am very sorry for you!

[/ QUOTE ]

How sorry, exactly? Sorry enough to do something charitable to help poor old me? Like poo pick? Or buy me lunch?
Just wondered....

In Argentina, if you're employed ina professional capacity, you avoid making sensible decisions, like putting rugs back on that are hanging round belly of horse, or cleaning out the water troughs, and you feel completely at liberty to LIE about having done said tasks AND you continue to feed the hothead chestnut straight maize even though the person who has to ride him said not to. What does SHE know, eh? But then I'm weak and emotional and would rather not fall of another horse...

Are you bored Shils?

Nope Sorry for you as the only thing I can offer is to spend about 15 hours talking to you about the trials and tribulations of elderly parents or to let you turn my compost hepa I bet you could break it down just be looking at it
