Well mine was on DIY until I decided to loan her to a friend in Cornwall.
I hear she's now on 24hr turn out & ad lib hay. I'm telling you, it does not come up to my standards of a sugar lump, banana, oats & conditioning mix diet & my Parelli only 'technique' (I never rode her as my confidence is not good. And if I fell off my legs are likely to detach from my body)

There are statistics that a significant number of horses kept on DIY every year will not survive....it's a disgrace.

Would these be the old and sick?

Well, I think by definition, you can't get much more ill than dead.

Ah touché

Actually, I'd just like to retract that statement.
I live near Gloucester: there are states of being beyond dead.

Nope Sorry for you as the only thing I can offer is to spend about 15 hours talking to you about the trials and tribulations of elderly parents or to let you turn my compost hepa I bet you could break it down just be looking at it

I just can't understand why people would have horses, if they can't afford to pay someone to look after them properly on full livery?
It's not as if the average horse owner has any qualifications to enable them to recognise illness/formulate rations etc.
Thoughts?

don't need qualifacations to become a parent!! And as a parent that is far more demanding than a flippin horse.

What a stupid thread!!

And do you know, it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling that you replied to it.
Thank you for your contribution....but can a thread itself be stupid...or is it inanimate? Are you therefore implying that I am stupid? I think you'll find it is against the terms and conditions that you signed up to, to abuse an innocent forum member like myself in this way.
I demand an apology.

Ah yes - the 'clique's . . . . have seen some really interestingly named ones since I joined the forum. I wonder if it is like joining the masons? By invitation only and with odd initiation ceremonies

I know, I know... I really must toughen up or I'll NEVER be an Established Member of HHO or belong to a proper click.

Beat yourself with the carrot stick PF, that will toughen you up.
At least you employ someone to do your horse, thus attaining the approval of Shailasdair, I don't and am obviously doooooooooooooomed.
Does DIY count if I am not paying to be on someone elses' yard? But.........I am a YO and people pay ME to look after their horses. So where does that put me in the grand Shilasdair scheme of things? Hum ho....
Im so glad Im not the only one with nothing to do on a friday night....
for my part its because I was pulling ragwort up till 9.30pm and am now exhausted. Whats your excuse, Shilasdair?!

But then the average parent has no NNEB qualfications to rear a child!
Hoever, many workng DIY-ers have done Pony Club and ridng club training and tests, some have BHS quals but fnd that working in a non horsey career is more rewarding and they can keep a horse.
No wait, if you're a step below DIY (I actually help the YO do their DIY at times in return for a discount) then what am I?? Do tell. If there's a new low, I want to be there first!
For your future reference, I am the forum daemon (although perhaps not the only one) and therefore not to be trusted.
Hope that helps you to be more discriminating in future (you wouldn't want to post on any more stupid threads, now, would you?
