DIY magnet bands?

Just a thought... thinking of trying some magnetic fetlock bands for my mare who has arthritic hocks. I am sceptical about such things but figured they won't to any harm & if they prove beneficial then all the better.

However at £70 a pair for what looks like a Velcro strap with a few strong magnets sewn in, it's a lot of money to spend on an experiment!

Has anyone made something similar themselves? Strong medical magnets are easily sourced for about £5 for 10, then a length of webbing & velcro for a couple of quid... I'm sure I could make something like this for about £15 all in. Anyone tried this? Did it work? Any tips?

No I haven't but the physio I used to use on my horse recommended I made a DIY magnetic rug. She suggested buying medical magnets, apparently you can get some in velcro pouches for attaching to dog beds and then attaching them to a horse fleece. Have to say I never tried but the fact that she suggested it and she's a professional so should know her stuff, makes me think your plan might work!

Neodynium magnets are the worlds strongest magnets.There attraction (what makes them slam together) is amazing, you literally cant prise them apart they are so strong! I have made my own magnetic rug and leg bands but eventually I bought Bioflow boots for my mare as the technology is proven.

Hmm, interesting... Did you find the Bioflow boots more effective? I am looking at the "bracelet" type (by pulse magnetics I think), which can be left on 24/7.

Hopscotch bandit, could you tell me how you made your rug? I would be very interested in trying to do something with a cotton summer sheet and my mum's sewing machine! Especially if it saves me £££££, the never ending horsey supply of money my horse thinks I have has run dry!

Yes Bioflow use a thing called central reverse polarity which basically means that the magnets are made with a large magnet with smaller magnets inset around them.I think they have three poles instead of the normal two.When blood passes underneath the magnet it shakes up the blood causing it to be disturbed. This promotes a warming feeling and promotes healing.The fields, concentration and configuration means it works better than standard magnets on the market.I'm sure Bioflow's products can be replicated easily enough but they have patented their ideas for the market place. Hi FC I just got a summer sheet and some material I had at home, think it was old curtain lining and just cut strips and put three magnets on the inside of the summer sheet where the shoulder and quarters would be encasing each one in a bit of material and sewed them together using thread the same color as the old summer sheet so my rubbish sewing didn't show up very much.I only used it prior to riding and didn't keep it on overnight as I wasn't sure how 'safe' it was. I know you can't really do harm with magnets unless using them in certain areas of the body or over fresh woonds but even so, I am hardly an expert.I actually have a magnetic rug that someone gave me but its only a 6ft and my mare is 6ft 3 so its too small but has the magnets in the right areas.Again don't leave it on her overnight.
