Hi,

Can anyone please recommend either DIY or grass livery no more than about 6 miles from GU6 7SG (Ewhurst, nr Cranleigh in Surrey)?

Ideally it would be great if it could be up towards either Holmbury, Pitch or Leith Hills, as I'm an endurance rider, so good off-road hacking important!

Many thanks for any advice!

Melanie.

I am just about to move to little burgate farm, hascombe. Didnt have grass livery vacancies left but think possibly diy @ £35 a week. Hacking straight onto the greensand way and haydons ball, 1 mile sand gallops, 2 sand schools...can PM number if you like or PM me

Hi,

Thanks for your reply, much appreciated. :0) I actually lived in Hascombe for 9 years! I had a horse there too. It's fantastic riding, and it would be brilliant to have the gallops, but I was hoping for somewhere a little closer (that's about 8 miles/22mins from the AA planner).

Enjoy the new yard, I am sure you will!

Thanks again,

Melanie.

There is also a place called The Secret Garden in Holmbury St MAry who do grass and diy at the same price of £35...I got their details from the preloved website...have you tried looking there??

Can't advise on livery, sorry - just wanted to say that I have fond memories of hacking through the woods up to the ridge top of Holmbury Hill where one can, on a clear day, see right over Surrey and Sussex to the south coast and a thin sliver of sea at the horizon. That was in the 1970s.

This looks very much like the spot...

I also used to visit Pitchwood Stud, Ewhurst regularly in summers of the 1980s. My aunt did a book called "A Pony's Tale: A Year In The Life Of A Foal" based on one of their riding pony foals.

Fburton - I live at the bottom of Holmbury Hill (on the Peaslake side) so that photo made me smile!

There are loads of yards right near that postcode Melanie, esp round Forest Green. Holmbury Hill Farm used to do DIY livery and there is someone advertising DIY livery on Farley Green for one horse in the Peaslake shop (I know who it is and she is v nice lady) - there is a school. Can get the number tonight if you are interested.

Thanks for all the great replies!

Wow, what a view! :0)

Yes please re the contact details for the yard at Farley Green! That is an easy drive as it's just up over the hill. Sounds like just what I am looking for, thank you.

I will also investigate Holmbury Hill Farm and Secret Garden Stables.

Many thanks,

Melanie.

Have you considered Coldharbour? There's Crocker's Farm, opposite the Plough - don't know if they're DIY/Full, though. About 10 mins from Ewhurst I reckon!

BTW, is this Mel B?? Although you're probably married by now!! You helped me when I was starting on the old barefoot journey, bloomin yonks ago, now!! Tis Di with Henry (and yes, I still have him and he's got concrete feet this year!).

Hi Di,

Many thanks for the suggestion. I think Coldharbour is a little too far out again for DIY livery (20mins drive according to the AA Planner). Bearing in mind I'd be going there at least twice a day, and having to fit it in around school runs etc, I think that would be pushing it! Looks like a nice area though. :)

And yes, I was a Mel B, and still am actually, as my new surname starts with a B too! Pleased you are doing so well Di. :)

Does anyone know anything about Stubbetts Farm by the way? You can see it from the Ockley Road, and it looks really nice, but I can't find any info on it other than it is primarily a 'hunting' yard...?

Thanks again everyone!

Melanie.

Hi RebelRebel,

Just heard back from Holmbury Farm - they only do Full Livery now. Ditto for Yard Farm and Charles Equestrian.

Can you remember the names of any other yards that you know of in this area?

I am literally surrounded by horses as far as the eye can see, but it is surprisingly tricky to find DIY livery! I guess it's perhaps hard for yard owners to make ends meet with DIY liveries in the current climate... :(

Hey ho, I will keep on hunting!

Thanks again, :)

Melanie.

Oooh just thought of one in Ockley! Standon Stables! They're very much into Western, there, but take 'normal' liveries, too! They definitely did grass and diy 3 years ago!

How about 'Coverwood Farm' at Peaslake, friends mum did take liveries there ad stunning location and hacking.....pm if you want a tel no.

Small world, my foal was born at Pitchwood after my old boss bought the yard 10 years ago! :):)

Small world indeed! :)

I haven't been back there for ages.. well, 10+ years at least. I don't suppose you know where Dee Bennett went to and/or whether she continued to breed riding ponies? I expect Keston Fidelity - he was lovely, a real character - is long gone now, but I expect Pitchwood Impressario is still alive.

Does Maple Stud EC in Ewhurst not do livery?

As I understand it, they do livery, but have very limited turnout in the winter. Also, the road through Ewhurst is now very busy, and my mare is not great with anything much larger than a van unfortunately, hence my searching for good off-road hacking!

Thanks again everyone for all the replies. I have some great leads, so hopefully at least one of them will come to fruition! :D

Melanie.

Not sure I'd fancy grass livery in Ewhurst - it's on clay and the ground is foul in the winter (I've some fabulous pics of my boys when we liveried over that way).

Nicky Lythaby had a yard over that way. Not sure if she's still going but she's very good (albeit a little dippy sometimes).

Thanks for posting that - that also brings back great memories as was effectively at the top of the fire breaks/gallops! and then a more windy path down. I was on a DIY years ago in Ewhurst but know that changed to a polo yard.

Why not put up a "required" note in one of the local shops? I am in Brockham now and it seems qiute a few DIY advertise in that way..

I don't know how old the advert is but I was doing a google for instructors to travel to yesterday and found one in Cranleigh who was advertising for a DIY space on her private yard, it may have been Debbie Moore?

Debbie is fabulous - a TTT dressage trainer and (although I've not seen it), apparently her yard is immaculate. She used to come over and teach one of our liveries. Lovely lady, very professional.

Dragging this back up as I too am now looking for livery around Ewhurst. DIY or grass. I have tried the yard mentioned above to no avail. I am going to contact the yard in Farley Green but she only wanted a gelding last time I enquired and I have a mare ( a very well behaved one but still a mare!). Any other suggestions? A private yard with space for 3 mares would be ideal as I have a friend who would come too, or else a livery yard or private space for one. Thank you.
