Hello all,

A friend of mine is moving jobs and as such is moving to Reading.

Does anyone know of any DIY or part livery yards around Reading?! Good or bad (to avoid!!)

Many thanks xx

Hi there,

Cullinghood is good, got 2 close friends there that love it!

Personally, i would avoid Hall Place, as i have heard of a few bad things happen, its quite bitchy i think...

hope this helps!

becxy bee the manager of hall place is a member on here I believe!!

OP I'm from Reading - where abouts specifically in Reading as I know of a few places on different sides of town

There's several places around Reading - but Reading is a bit of a traffic jam, as is the Reading Southern ByPass aka M4 ! I think she'd need something easy to get to from home or on the way to/from work otherwise she can spend 40 mins plus each way in traffic but only going 5-10 miles!

Which side/area of Reading is she moving to, and what facilities does she need (eg some areas have poor hacking due to proximity of suburbia)?

Well, i personally know the manager of Hall Place, and im only being honest! A close friend got bullied seriously by some people on the yard, and i did say in my opinion (i think?) lol.

Saying this, i still compete there, it is a lovely yard, i did my work experience there, so its not all bad! lol

oh god dont worry it doesnt bother me!!lol! just wanted to warn you in case she saw it and got annoyed! I love it for competing but dont know much about it as a livery yard though

Have PM'd you but suggestions are Wokingham but one has an easy train option (20mins fast train (30mins slow train) that includes the ten minute walk from the train station). I know because I used to live 2mins away from it and used to have a bf in Reading (I know how long I can stay out and get back in time for curfew!):D

Hi, yep best to say roughly where she will work live dont be specific just roughly (or go by railway stations or something) as it can take ages to get from Caversham to Theale for example and there are many Reading postcodes.

Hi guys! Thanks for all the messages - she will be working on the university campus?? Not sure where she's living, but i'd imagine it would be as close to work as possible...Does that help??? Sorry, don't know Reading at all myself!!

Ok cool ,thanks.

I think we will probably go down on a Saturday and arrange some visits. Are there any good tack shops around that have a notice/advert board for the smaller yards that dont have websites etc?

Thanks

Yards nearest to the Uni campus would be around winnersh, arborfield, wokingham and sindlesham I'd imagine.

Local tack shops are eileen douglas as eversley and wokingham and Millwheel at binfield.

Great, thanks so much for your help! It's so hard moving in to a completley unknown area - and it's not even me that's moving!! Thanks for all the suggestions - keem 'em coming!!

uni is in earley so anywhere round there - most likely areas not too far are lower earley, sindlesham, winnersh, binfield and wokingham. Do a bit of googling :)

Not much in Lower Earley :D I wish!

Really depends what she wants and timing - so many yards round here are full to bursting. Sindlesham, Hurst, Arborfield, Shinfield, Spencers Wood, Three Mile Cross, Swallowfield, Riseley, Twyford, Farley Hill, possibly parts of Wokingham. (Those are all villages/small towns which are fairly easy to get to even in busy traffic - it's where I looked and I'm not a million miles away from Reading Uni.) Binfield, Wargrave, parts of Bracknell area might also be do-able if she can't find anything nearer.

I'm at a lovely yard in Hurst, not many spaces left, but does depend what facilities she wants - individual paddocks, year round turnout, nice stables, storage area, coffee and tack room, hay/haylage and straw available, extra help when needed (it's a godsend!), lovely people. But school surface isn't great (floods, can be hard). It is floodlit though. And hacking isn't amazing - road work, but you can join the local riders club which gets you access onto the gallops and some fields I think (my horse is retired so I don't know much about it). PM if that's of any interest.

Noticeboard at the Stable Door Saddlery, Brookhouse Farm, Sulhamstead Rd, Burghfield, RG30 3SD
It's a bit out of the way, and a bit over to the south-west of Reading, but might have something useful,

I'm based between Mortimer and Reading (5 mins from Junc 11 M4) and have a space.
Livery package to suit but can offer all types. Very small quiet yard with own horses and 3 liveries.
20 x 40 new sand and fibre outdoor arena
large airy stables
Year round turnout
Lunge pen
Excellent hacking
Drop me a private message if interested and will give you more details as too much to list.

Hi
I just saw your post about livery in / near reading

Im due to be moving to readins soon, ill be working and hopefully living just off junction 11 of the M4 so was wondering if you happened to have any space at your yard. Currently ive decided to priorotise my horse home search ahead of mine.
If not any suggestions would be fantastic.
Thanks
Lizzy

Hi, my horse is kept just off junc 11, theres loads of yards around there. mine only has space for grass liveries and i cant recommend any by name, but id drive around the area and just knock on doors. thers great hacking too :) if you put in the satnav ufton nervert, itll take you a route past lots of yards. Ive heard bad things about cullinghood :( and hall place, i had my horse there before, is lovely, but it is a riding school over a livery yard and most of the liveries are staff. But the facilities are fab. Depends what you want!! If you want directions to anything or more info o can try to find out for you!!

Ahem, I am the manager of Hall Place! As with every yard there are disagreements between pople and you can take one side or another (and I hear stories about all sorts of yards but choose to ignore it) but I can assure you ( as the above poster would clarify) that it is not a bitchy yard- in fact far from it. Most of the liveries are either staff or lesiure riders and have no intrest in what other people are doing with their horses.
If anyone needs help then it is always on hand, for example, last month I took a liveries horse to the vets for emergancy colic surgery at 11 pm at night, it was not an issue.
We have 3 arenas- one small indoor, and 2 outdoor- 1 is floodlit. We also have a xc course, on site tack shop and feed shop, rug cleaning service, off road hacking, coffee shop, loos and showers.
We train the Reading Uni team and the other students come over 3 days per week for lessons.
As the above poster stated, we are a riding school so have lessons in the arenas however you can share and there are allocated livery riding slots to ensure people can get to ride.
At the moment we have 44 liveries ( not including our riding school) so can't be all bad! We are full at the moment but have 1 due to move on soon as we are a little far away. Most of our liveries have been with us for 5 yrs or more.
I have heard bad things about lots of yards in the area but I take it all with a pinch of salt, no one likes anything better than to moan about a yard, esp if they were asked to leave.
Here is our website if intrested.
www.hall-place.com
If not PM me and I will be happy to reccomend others in the area.
