DIY people who also work FT

5.30 get up horses are at home give horses b/fast and i have mine while there eating , rug up put them out and muck out

7.00 have shower get ready for work
sit on a train for 45 mins get to work about 8.55 work a ridiculously long day , mum usually exercises during the day in winter

7pm get home bring horses in feed put beds down get everything ready for morning then feed mums cobs in the field

8.30/9pm put my feet up and dread the next day (kiddin its nt that bad )

When we were in the process of moving, we woke up at 4.45, got up at 5, dress, breakfast etc down to yard to feed and turn out 3, sometimes muck out one or skip out, ( turn out rugs in and out) on the road for 6, drive to Lincoln, drop one off, other drive another hour to Grimsby, work, turn round, pick up at Lincoln, drive back to Cambridgeshire, muck out 3, feed etc, eat dinner, look at Rightmove, collapse into bed 11-12 and start again in the morning. Weekends clear field, scrub water trough, general tidy up, ride etc. Did that for 8 months, nearly killed us. I couldn't have done it on my own.

Now- horses in 11 acres at end of garden. Morning, take dogs for walk round field, check horses standing up - they are out for as long as possible, go to work, come home (30 mins max), muck out, feed, hay etc 3 in 40 mins (will be doing 5 this year so an hour?), indoors, glass wine, dinner etc by 8 -8.30. Weekends - fiddle about, groom, ride etc. And so much cheaper it's untrue. If you are in a position to buy a place with land and you have several horses, do it. One or two are manageable; we've done that, but more becomes a strain. I used to commute to London with 2 horses, 2 hour commute , but didn't need to be on the road for train till 7.20, so quite civilised really in retrospect.

In winter the routine goes like this...
5am - get up, bathroom etc
5.20 - leave for yard
5.30 - arrive, feed, soak hay, muck out, fill water, make feeds.
6.00 - de-mud! , tack up
6.15 - ride
7.00 - groom, turnout
7.30 - change and leave for work
8.00 - start work until 4.30

Thanks folks.
I kind of knew it was impossible to do three, wash, and leave for a 60 mile drive to work each day, but needed to see your timetables to see if there was any way...
I think I'll pay a nice student to do them in the morning - then I'll just have to do the evening feeds/hay/poo pick etc.

In summer they live out...so I don't go down on a morning, only after work...YO would ring me if there was a problem.

In winter....

Up at 6am, get to yard at about 20 past.
Turn out and muck out 3 stables, hang nets up.
Put hay out in paddock if needed and top up water trough etc....
Back home for 7.30..shower, change- set off at 8.50 to drop daughter off at school and start work at 9am.

Finish work about 5pm....
Get to yard about 5.30 to bring in...all I have to do is water buckets and feeds- I usually make up haynets the night before to save time on a morning.
Get back home by 7pm at the latest if riding/lunging etc.
7.05...open bottle of wine.....

Weekends I do a big muck out and leave the beds up and generally tidy up any stuff I havn't had time to do during the week.

QR - agree with saddlesore and suggest paying someone to turn out and then you can do in the evening. This is what I do. I go up when I finish work any time from between 6.30-8pm and muck out and bring in then. It means I can potter about getting everything ready for the next day, feeds etc, without worrying too much about time.

I am not able to easily get up before work - yard is 45 mins away and would be a rush to do it all and would not have time to go home and change etc before work.

Just buy a head torch!

hmmm

poo picking by torchlight - you really know how to party!

[/ QUOTE ]

Sadly, I confess to poo picking by headtorch and torchlight already...and my field is on quite a steep hill...the muck heap being at the top (where else!).
With three, who live out all the time, I can't bear to spend my entire weekend poo-picking (which would be the alternative).
Social lives are over-rated.

i used to do the pony before work, but now i cant as theres no way i can go into work dirty/smelly/messy!!unfortunately!!!! and horse is kept too far away to go and come back then off to work
frown.gif
So my YO feeds, changes his rug and turns out for me which is nice!! I finish work at half 5 then get to the yard 6ish, muck out do hay water feeds etc, bring in, groom, ride and put to bed usually home by 8
smile.gif
miss going up in the mornings and it is more work later but its just not practical! I would suggest getting a sharer, helps with the bank balance and the exercising too!!x

6am alarm goes off
6.20am actually get up
6.40 leave home
6.50 get to yard *feed, rug up and turnout 3
7.20 leave yard and set off to work
8am get to work
4.30 leave work
5.10 get back to yard
7pm home

Winter routine-

7.15am -Get up
7.45- On yard. Morning jobs are muck out, breakfast/rugs/turnout/soak daytime hay.
8.30-9am- In office. Am lucky, currently only have a 500 yard commute from stable to desk.
(Lunch time skip out- 1 mare on box rest. Ride if I can)
4.30-5pm- Finish work. Evening routine, bring in, skip out/sweep the yard of the one that's in, rugs and feed.
Home by 6.30ish.

Weekends I catch up on poo-picking (or if I get up early I might do it in the week in the morning) and make all my hay nets up ready for the week ahead, to save time.
I'm not a morning person so I quite like my winter routine
blush.gif
Summer I'll usually be on the yard by 7am if not earlier to ride first, and I can poo pick in the evenings then too.

It can be done but it might help to have a helping hand, even if it's just some-one to turnout for you in the morning and you do the jobs in the evening.

I have to say I am surprised at how many people are still going with the horse late into the evening and not getting home before 8 or later. I can only assume you are all single or don't have children. I know it wouldn't work for me which is why I do everything I can early in the mornings.

Can you tell me your daily 'timetable' please - what time you get up, what you do at the yard and how long it takes etc.
Thanks

Up at 7.30
Arrive yard about 8.00/8.15
Change rug & turn out
Muck out (bank up straw), fill 2 hay nets
Leave at 8.30/8.45
Back to yard between 4.00-5.00
Lay bed, make dinner
Catch in/groom/sometimes ride
Put to bed with dinner
Leave yard 6.00 (when not riding)

Pony is a sensitive chap and can't live in and does not get on well at all yards hence the long commute! The yard he is on he loves and is not like most yards so would be hard to move him anywhere else but I have an hour and half on a good day (if trains work well) commute from yard to work.

However as pony lives out and is prone to getting fat he only needs to be fed once a day. He lives in a small group and there are other people who have the luxuary of not having to work going to the yard during the day who would hopefully notice if something really bad had happened to him.

So leave work at 5.00ish and then get to yard about 6.30 - find pony in very big dark fields - sometimes it can take half an hour if they are hiding in a dark corner. Check and feed him and then get home about 8ish depending on how long I spend chatting with other liveries. One day a week I leave work at 3 and this enables me to get home at a sensible time!

I can pay YO £5 to feed and check him etc and have done that sometimes.

If he was happy living in he would probably be at a different yard a bit nearer to home, though because I work in central London I would always have a long commute.

yes indeed no kids
smile.gif
not single but only see the boyf at weekends so dont mind playing with the pony in the morning!! Tired enough coping with my job and a horse so dont know how you do it with having to look after your kids and house/ hubby etc!! You deserve a medal!!!!

Ha... 8pm is early for me! My timetable tends to be;

6am- alarm goes off.
6.15am- give up hitting snooze and actually get up!
wink.gif

6.30am- leave house after throwing on manky jeans/hoody etc.
6.45am- get to yard, feed, muck out mine, turn out mine plus one other (they are in the same field and in exchange, the other horse's owner brings mine in in the afternoon, saving me £1.50/day for the YM doing it!
laugh.gif
).
7.40am- leave yard (ish)
7.55am- get back home, shower, do hair/make up, iron whatever clothes I'm wearing etc!
9.20am- leave house, drive into work for 10am start.

6pm- leave work (all going well, often there can be an hour or two overtime which really scuppers any riding plans.
frown.gif
)
6.40pm- get to yard (straight from work)
7pm- ride for an hour (I aim for 2 or 3 times a week riding, sharer does one day and she gets 1 or 2 days off)
9pm- somehow manage to faff around and blether at the yard while cooling off horse/feeding her dinner
wink.gif
, so tend to leave yard at 9pm ish and get home about 9.15pm/9.30pm.

Days I'm not riding I can get home at the back of 7pm. I am married, but have no kids. Luckily Mr FigJam does karate/kickboxing on Mon/Wed nights (which are nights I try to ride), sharer does a Tues (night we're both home straight after work) and then it's just a Thurs or Fri he's left to "pine" for me! (AKA full control of the remote or out doing photos at a gig/more training etc!
tongue.gif
)

I just can't bear to get up at 5am to add in riding in the morning too.
frown.gif
But I guess I could and it would make evenings nicer, but I can be so tired as it is, not sure I fancy it.

Agree that doing 3 sounds a bit much, good luck finding a nice, trustworthy student to help you out Shils.

Hmmm i am very lucky in that i don't have to go to the yard in the mornings...

So work 8.20am - 4pm (generally), walk home drive to yard for 5pm, bring Merlin in to eat, ride Blue, groom Merlin and feed Blue, sweep yard, make feeds for morning, and i tend to get home at about 7.15pm ish
smile.gif

Which is an improvement on if i finish work at 5pm, hence always trying to finish at 4pm now!
wink.gif

Alarm goes off at 06:00.
Roll out of bed and into nearest clothes and into car.
At yard for ususally 06:15.
Feed, muck out, refill water, haynet, rug change, turnout, poo pick paddock. Leave by 07:00.
Home by 7:10.
Walk dogs/go for a run, home, shower, change, in work for 8.
Finish 16:30. Home, change, to yard by around 1700ish
Bring in, ride, put to bed, usually home by 18:30.
Phew!

I get up at 5:00am, at the yard by 5:30 all done by 6:30 ish, home ,shower, and leave for work at 7:30.
Home between 6:00 and 6:15, quick cup of tea, make supper for the family, then back to the yard for evening stables all done by 8;00 ish, if I ride then I don't get back until 9:00. Cup of tea and off to bed.

Hmmm
I have three, you see, and will be travelling 60 miles to work (no motorways) for a while, to get there at 9.
I think I may have to pay someone to do them

You need to move nearer your job and move the horses as well

Social life is definately overrated.

5:30/6am, get up, breakfast, turn out/stables etc
8am - 3pm - work
3 - 4 - an hour to do paperwork!
4-5:30pm - bring in, groom, put to bed (pony is turned away so no riding)
6pm - 10pm - teach pole dancing /fitness classes
10:30pm - home, bowl of cereal for dinner, then bed!

Riding will have to squeeze in somewhere when I reback the wild beast!

05.45 - alarm goes off
06.00 - roll out of bed
06.00- 06.45 - walk dog etc
06.45 - 07.40 - get to yard, muck out, turnout, fill water...all normal chores!
07.45 - 08.15 - get ready for work, shower, eat breakfast
09.15 - get to work!
17.15 - leave work
1800 - home, let dog out
18.15 - at the yard to bring in, groom, ride, put to bed
20.00 - home and walk dog (if OH hasn't)
20.30 - eventually start to make dinner, sit down and relax
GO TO BED!!!

0530 alarm goes off, rolls out of bed
0600 - 0630 send OH out with dog while I do packed lunches, get kids up, fed, dressed
0630 - 0700 send OH to work, drive to yard
0700 - 0720 give Ped feed, change rug, walk to field, kids stay in car
0720 - 0740 Take kids to child minder (7 mile diversion in place so NOT happy in mornings!)
0740 - 0800 get to work, whip jeans off and pop heels on and suit jacket!
0800 - 01630 work
1630 go to childminder to collect kids if OH still working, or straight home, let dogs out, drive to yard if OH & kids not coming
1700 - 1830 stables, rugs, feed etc etc
1830 - home, feed everyone, baths, homework, usually fall asleep on sofa!

Current 'winter/dark evenings/no turnout' Monday to Friday routine. Am doing my two but includes doing the odd bit for the other two

Up 6.45
Go outside
smirk.gif
7.00 (with coffee)
Give haylage, adjust any rugs, skip out and tidy round takes about 30 mins when taps are working.
Back in for 7.45
Shower and change by 8.00 (no makeup and easy hair)
Work by 8.45

Next haylage 2pm given by whoever is around

Evening stables, from 5pm onwards takes as long as it takes (full mucks for all) and whatever riding... Times vary with weather and who is cooking dinner.

Colic check and last nets/skip out between 10.30pm and midnight.

Weekends are much more flexible of course and summer is far messier with turning out and bringing in, flies to protect against and fields to clean, muzzles to fit and check etc.
