As title really. I am on diy, but for various reasons my foal is brought in for me everyday. I also may end up having my other two brought in as well. Buuut - I am not sure about this and it isn't the money.

I actually like doing all the hard work!

Even if I could afford full livery for all 3 of mine I wouldn't do it. Am I a bit mad?!

I love doing my horse. My y/o turns my horse out and brings her in, mucks out and poo picks half the time anyway, free of charge, it actually sometimes annoys me as I like doing these irksome jobs!!

I would like full livery just so that I know he would always be done and if something happened and I was needed somewhere urgently his routine would not be upset and I would not have to worry about him... in reality tho I love spending time up there and seeing him and fusing over him which is one of the reasons that I only have assisted DIY

Definately, although I wouldn't want him ridden so it's more what I would call part livery, I don't mind doing my horses at all, but would be quite happy not to have to muck out every day!!

I love doing mine as well and you can decide how you organise everything and the way his bed looks etc, I'm a bit of a control freak to be honest! And theres no way I could afford full, but thats only half of it really.

I would love assisted DIY, eg my horse gets thrown out and brought in for me, and mucked out when necessary. BUT would hate to ahve on full livery, as I like to be my ponies only mum!!

No Ive had 2 on full livery when I was working away a lot and I didnt like it at all. Ive got 3 at home now and I much prefer it.

If I could afford it I'd pay some reputable to do my horses for me a few times a week in winter. I don't keep them at a yard so person would have to drive over specially.

no i would not, you did not give an option for would you do half livery as i would so do that if i could afford it, just to give me a break sometimes from the crappy winter weather some days, but i would not want to do full livery, i would miss not seeing her

i am a diy livery but the y/o puts them out and brings them in but on a monday my mum goes and mucks out for me and i miss her so bad i ask all stupid questions when she gets in. ps i am new to this thanks heather

I would love to have Milly on full livery sometimes!

At the moment I feel like this all the time!

The bad weather, no school, wet fields, mud, poo picking, the list just goes on!

It would be so nice, to just be able to go a yard and take my horse out to just groom and ride.

Saying all this, I wouldn't change the fact that I still see my old lads grumpy face everyday and that in itself is a blessing in disguise. As and when anything happens to him, I will serioulsy look at having Milly on livery, as I think I would get so much more out of her.

Maybe occasionally I'd have full livery if I could afford it, say a couple of weeks a year, just to have a break. But generally no, I love doing my horse. I hate just riding horses and not looking after them and I hate looking after my horse and not riding her. There has to be a combination of the two to keep me sane! Plus I love doing my horse how I want and I don't think even the best livery yard would do it how I want it as I'm too fussy

No. I seem to remember this topic caused almighty rows last time it came up! Don't have it, though I admit my YO is very good and does the haylage twice a day even though its DIY (mind you there's only me on the yard!!!). I also have the added bonus of very good working hours as a teacher, so I can always get to the yard before dark even in midwinter. But personally I think part of the fun is the care, it's not just about the riding for me. Fair enough, I know everyone is busy and for some it's just impossible, but I will always choose DIY over full livery while I have the option.

Oh and p.s, have to say I much prefer having control over what my horses do, where they graze, and what they eat. Had to keep them at a mixed yard for a month once, and it was horrendous, all sorts of irritating, nosey, stuck-up cliquey people there - DIYers as well as full liveries btw. Was so glad to get back to normal, just me and the YO, who keeps himself to himself but is always on hand if anything needs sorting. Feel pretty lucky really...or maybe I'm just antisocial when it comes to livery!

There are times when I'd say yes and times when I'd say no... I might consider having one on part livery and one on DIY if I had the money.

I've done both, but unless you really trust the people looking after your horses it's more worry than it's worth been on full livery.
I'm now on assisted DIY with all of mine which is just right- enough help to lessen the responsibilty, but I still get everything done as I like

I like assisted DIY but would love Full if i could afford it - I'd like to know that if i had to work late it wouldn't affect the horse and would also mean that the time i did have up at the yard would be used actually spending time with the horse, rather than with its S*+t.

That said it all depends on the yard you are at - there are yards that i wouldnt ask to look after a cup of tea let alone a horse!! in which case DIY is much easier and stress free.

well im on diy but live there so dad does it most of the time- i bring in groom ride muck out when he hasnt, do feeds bring other peoples horses in. i dont know what you would call that?!

if i had that sort of money, i'd buy myself another pony and keep it on DIY

i like doing the work, good bonding time, although when it's cold and wet i woldn't mind it if someone mucked out for me.. oh, and did the haynets, our lot have 7 big haynets a day in total, and guess who usually ends up filling them! hate haynets!

The idea certainly appeals when work gets really busy (endless rain) and my Mum is on holiday. However I have worked in most of the livery yards in my area and would never pay for the service they give. Unfriendly and having horses basically living out to save the work load - they all finish up their horses by 4.30 and no one checks them later than that. I'm not happy leaving a fit event horse in their care and would miss the contact and the ability to know him very well

I love doing my own horse but yes,if i had the expendable cash i would opt for full livery(would still insist on knowing what he is fed etc)!!Was on full livery few yrs back and it was great to be able to go down a nd just spend time with him, grooming and riding!!

No. I keep mine at home (have never had to keep them in livery so far!). I couldn't imagine leaving it up to someone else to look after my horse. It was just be weird after its always been solely myself doing them for years!

Without meaning to sound snobby we could afford full livery for our horses but choose not to. For us a huge part of the pleasure of having them is looking after them - probably more than riding them if the truth be told! I'm also really fussy when it comes to their care and would worry they weren't being looked after as well as we look after them.

Well, to be perfectly honest I'd be very happy to have someone do the dirty jobs, like mucking out and poo picking! The horses don't know or care who does that, and it would leave more time to actually enjoy the horses. I like to do most of the handling and feeding myself, although I am lucky and get some help with turnout and bringing in for a couple of days a week, and that makes for a bit of a break. I used to have my own yard and do everything myself, but some backup is handy if you're ill, or just want to have a nice day out.

No- not unless the full livery was of the quality that someone from Sweden? described on here; really professional and seen as a service- not a favour. Even when I've had mine on part livery or DIY there have been probs; horse chased / bitten by owners dog; horses turned out in field without water trough and expected to drink out of puddles !!! (this at an apparently very smart livery yard) plus all the usual stuff about who is turned out where, and who gets fed what, etc.etc. I have been at a couple of really good yards, over the years, and couldn't claim that my standards are better than (or even maybe as good as) these good ones; and I don't have many facilities (the place without a water trough had an indoor & a floodlit outdoor school!) but I do feel happier being able to make my own decisions.

With my own field its lonelier and harder work, but less hassle and more enjoyment overall.

No, if I had more money, I wouldn't go full livery; I'd employ a groom.
