Has anyone attempted to make a DIY slow hay feeder?

I've made one out of an old blanket box, with a hinge lid. cut a hole out of the lid leaving a rim of about 4-5 inches around the edge and put hasp and staples on it with carbiner clips to hold it closed. I then got some wood and a hole saw and cut 15 80mm holes in it to poke the hay through.

Hay goes in, holey wood on top. Lid closed and locked in place with the hasp and staple and horsey eats out of the holes. The lid stops the holey wood section coming out.

Except horsey keeps breaking the wood.

Any ideas? I was thinking of maybe trying to cut the holes into a section of old stable floor matting, but not sure that would work...
