Hi all,

My OH has just got himself a horse !!!! We currently have both on a DIY livery costing 120 per month each . Including hay and straw in winter . There is a school , good hacking jumps ect .
However , my parents have a 3 acre paddock with a barn , field shelter , water.

We have found another two portable stables things for Less than 1000. We could hire a school / jumps about 10mins down the road. With an xc course

What should I do? Home vs livery

I love having mine at home - tbh if I had to have horses at livery I would think long and hard about keeping horses.

I love having the place to myself, doing what I like, managing my own ground, and the peace and quiet.

I am also quite anti social though, and prefer hacking on my own - others might find having horses at home quite isolating.

Love having mine at home. Mare is retired though and pony is a companion. For me it really is living the dream - really appreciate having my horse on my doorstep, not sure how many years my horse has left so nice to make the most of our time together and know I can spoil her!
Downside is - difficult if I want to go away as have to arrange for someone to come. Rather than just write a quick note in the diary. Person I have found is fab - just hope it works out well for her too!

I would have to say home. Over the summer I have had both, one at home and one on DIY. I am due to move him home in two weeks and while I have enjoyed the company, the tea, the school on tap, I must admit I am looking forward to it. Everyone has been really helpful but I do like my own company, I will not miss the over helpful comments or the back biting. Some people do not like to see success. Some people I will miss, some people I will be glad to see the back of.

I had mine at home and thought I'd prefer livery (for the company ect) I moved them to livery and now I desperately want them back home and they probably will be in the next month. I hate hate hate livery yards and I have so much more time for them at home, but I suppose it depends on the yard, I'm yet to find a non bitchy, non backstabbing, hassle free yard that isn't full of two faced people. I'm not convinced they exist.

My vote is for yard, but my yard is lovely. Can go days without seeing anyone, but messages get left if anyone's planning anything fun - days out xc schooling \ pub rides etc. No bitching & we are a mixed bunch from comp horses to semi-retired happy hackers.
Before moving here I dreampt of horses at home, but the advantages out weigh that now. Going away, I don't need to think about horses, just let yo know. Company if I want it. Jump field (soon to be a manege) on site, when you've got 1/2hr after work hacking to a school won't happen, but can do a quick schooling session.
Any repairs to fencing / stables are not my problem.
Friend of mine has horses at home & seems to spend more time managing his horses & land than riding.

if you're doing DIY unassisted and there is an option to have them at home, then I would do it! I presume there will be no livery costs or you might pay something towards your parents but reduced?

I have always had mine at home, I don't think I could be on a yard with others.

I do like my own company and am very self motivated, I would hate to be governed by someone else's rules no matter how reasonable they are!
