Just interested really - how many on DIY yards go round and feed the entire yard (cos you are a softy) - how many just feed your own "block" and how many just feed your own or friends horses?
In the winter I am first there in the morning and so I feed all the horses (usualy about 12). They are in a U shape block of stables so they can all see each other and it's really unfair to feed my 2 and not the others. The feeds are all left in the feed room and are labelled so there's no way to make mistakes
I generally fed mine and my friends if they wanted most people came down at the same time so no real need to feed the whole yard, plus others could be very picky who fed their horses etc.
We used to just feed our own, then someone had the idea that we should leave feeds outside stable doors & first person down would feed them all, worked fine until it became clear that some people would lie in bed happy in the knowledge that some mug, usually me, was traipsing round feeding their horse. So, last winter, no more, just feed my 2 who are in a separate block, don't feed others, & don't expect mine to be fed as I am there same time every day to do it myself. If people want part livery, they shouldn't be on diy.
Unfortunaltey i am being mugged.... people who used to arrive at the same time as me are now arriving 10 mins later. Some who occasionally turn up early will only feed their own block if it is a "weekday". They dont show until 9 on a weekend - these are the ones who are complaing that it is a "yard rule" that 1st one there feeds.
YM - feeds at about 7.30 to 8 - but i am usually at yard for 6am. So i am now stuck - we are not supposed to be on yard until 8am but i am allowed on at 6 - so do i just carry on feeding and saying nought - or do i stop feeding and run the risk of being told not to be on yard until 8am ? - which would cost me a fortune to pay for turn out, rugs and would stop me riding as it is impossible to get in the school on a night.
Feed our own. The horses have got used to being fed separately and recognise the sound of their owners cars!! I'm always at the yard first so mine isn't bothered and the others don't think I'm feeding them so are quite settled.

Tell 'em you'll feed their horses for a fee or they can get of their lazy rumps and do it themselves. Explain to the YO that you don't mind feeding the others but people are taking advantage of the fact that you are allowed to be there early.
My YO feeds them all in the morning if we leave buckets outside stables. Then everyone feeds their own in evening. They are all used to their owners feeding them so dont get jealous of a bucket going past which isnt for them. Mine definitely knows when i'm in the feedroom so knows exactly when its her time to be fed.
We have our feeds made up ready in dustbins and haylage in old feed bags so we all then take turns, works well as there are seven of us so 2 turns each a week!
The ones that live closer do mornings (some on site) and others do nights, we all know exactly what were doing and swap about if we need, cant imagine doing it any other way now!
we just feed our own and other horses don't expect there feed as they know its not their turn as each horse has there feed kept in seperate areas and i personally hate it if someone else feeds my horse without me asking as it gets too confusing etc
I am always first on yard so feed everything (cos I am too soft) although there is only 10...
What I dont get though (and Im not sure if anyone else does this) is some people only come to the yard once a day, so obviously as I feed in the morning for them their horses are left in in dirty beds til the afternoon when they come to ride, doesnt make sense to me??
First one to arrive feeds everything on our yard. Normally it's not me, and I have 4 so I really benefit. However, often I am last up at night, and the 2 people who normally do the morning feeds can leave everything done for their horse in the morning, knowing I will bring in at night, pick, change, check and put tea in for them. They don't do it often, but it's nice I can pay them back somehow.
Great if you work things out, but no one ever did that at my old yard. At my part/full yard they are all fed together in the am and then all the full liveries are fed together pm, the others just have to suck it up, and they are fine about it
My poor girlie has to wait 2 hours until i get there
our YO feeds in the morning but if im up early to go competing then i usually feed. at night we all just feed our own unless the names are on our feed board.
Currently on part livery but used to be on DIY there are about 100 horses at my yard so it would not be feasible to feed all of those when pushed for time in the morning. It is the policy of the YO to feed all the DIYs in the morning as it stops the racket and damage to doors etc. Actually I used to find it annoying if someone fed earlier than expected as sometimes I would get there deliberately early to ride before breakfast and find it was too late as someone well meaning had fed him.

If I was on DIY no way would i be wanting to feed 10 other horses.

This. I'm on DIY and share mornings with a friend so feed ours but no way would I feed others. They want them fed earlier, they can pay YO or get out of bed earlier, not my problem. I haven't got time to look after everyone else's horses for free. IME horses get used to their owner feeding them and not others, so don't tend to worry if you feed your own first.
The first person to arrive on the yard feeds but to add a twist to this I am sometimes the first person on the yard to arrive if I am taking my pony to a show and he lives out and I go and collect him from his field which takes 30 minutes. He does not normally have breakfast so I am not part of the normal morning yard routine. I am not 100% confident dealing with bigger horses either but at a guess I would be able to recognise who has what breakfast so I could do it.
Should I as the first person to arrive on the yard therefore be feeding all the horses that live in at nights - there are about 20 of them at least even if my own pony is not part of the bfast routine?

My horse doesnt have breakfast yet I still feed others, it does annoy me as it means lazy people can carry on being lazy but I have been doing it so long now cant really say no!!
Whoever is there first feeds them all - there are between 6 and 8 in a barn block, so it would be unfair to just feed mine. I am often first (almost always at weekends) but it doesnt bother me - Im happy for the favour to be returned for my horse if someone else gets there first.
I think sometimes people can get very petty about the most trivial things. It takes maybe 2 minutes to chuck the feed bowls in - wheres the harm in doing that?
Mmmm, yard rule, first up feeds all - which is usually me! It does rile a little as the first person is usually the person with the least time (hence the ungodly hour), there could be up to 18 to feed. Horses are not fed together in the evenings and it doesn't cause a problem -the horses just don't expect it. Great if the favour could be returned - unfortunately it rarely is. New bunch of people at yard now, but I got struck in traffic coming home from work (about 15 miles away) due to the grim weather. No horse to be left out alone, but as I have 2 mine were left out! I was NOTa happy bunny! And breathe - rant over, sorry!
