FROM A WEBSITE: One of the reasons DMSO is so effective for medical purposes is that it has the ability to go through body mem-branes and speed up the movement of other drugs throughthe tissues. It can act as a carrier for other drugs, takingthem into the body tissues with it. DMSO rapidly pene-trates the skin and can carry other substances into thehorse’s system. It thus enhances the action of many drugs, such as topical anesthetics, antibiotics or corticosteroids.DMSO also works well to reduce inflammation, because of its ability to act as a scavenger, gathering up toxic free radicals(groups of atoms which go in and out of chemical combina-tion without changing themselves). These toxic groups ofatoms are released during the inflammatory process as thebody attempts to deal with injuries or bacteria or other attack-ing pathogens. The free radicals kill off harmful cells but alsodestroy some of the horse’s own healthy tissues, producinginflammation. By gathering up free radicals, DMSO reduces tissue damage and inflammation.

I used DMSO on my horse for his stifle when he was kicked and he had a bit of bone floating around and I painted it on twice a day. Was very effective. My horse had a splint and I was going to use it for that but decided against it, and the horse was only off work for about 4 days all in all with a few days to slowly come back into work also.

I believe it is very commonly used in the USA, but hardly known here at all. Certainly it seems to do what it says on the tin apparently!

DMSO is a solvent. We use it in the lab to freeze our cells in at -80C - at room temperature, it kills them pretty quickly!! I'd be extremely careful. Although DMSO on its own is not as toxic as, say, benzene, it has the ability to dissolve extremely carcinogenic chemicals and once dissolved in DMSO, they can quite easily cross the skin and get into the bloodstream. Wear gloves...
