DNA Testing

I keep seeing breeders quoting DNA testing, what are they testing for? I know you can test for tobiano etc (with some hairs?), can you test for other colours? Is it anything to do with proving parentage? Just trying tpo get to grips with this breeding malarky, it's a whole different world!!

The mare I had DNA'ed recently was to prove parentage.

I have a purebred ID. She had to be DNA'd as a foal to prove parentage. Vet just took a sample of tail hair. The sire and dam were already tested, just proves it's what it says on the can!

Is this your first year of putting your mare in foal? It's my first year & would like to get a bloodline.
Eh I might be going off track, but, I am looking to get my mare DNA sampled (she's a Strong connemara type) but No proof..

1)How likely is the Test to come out with a result?
2) Roughly what are the costs of this??
