Just as the title says really! Do any of your oldies live out .

I have a 22yr old that doesn't really like to be stabled, this is my first winter and worry about leaving in him out 24/7. There is a stable avaliable for weather like we've just had. But wondering how he'd cope we'll rugged out in the freezing temps.

Any thoughts/ opinions or experiences please :)

I prefer mine out if weather is ok. When he is in its for as little time as possible, about 9pm to 6am or else his legs are too stiff in the morning. However 22 isn't that old, mine is 31!

I have a horse who is about 22 who lives out. He has access to stables though
From the field. He copes much better this way. He has navicular which gets worse if he is stabled for any length of time.

Mine is also 22 but is definitely an oldie physically. She lives out 24/7 with access to a field shelter. She much prefers to be out. She does get rugged and does need to be kept warm. She has arthritis so the extra movement is good both to keep her warm and because the exercise is good for her.

We have 3 oldies living out - 22,24 and 28.. The older 2 aren't even in rugs yet as they are natives with big coats and honestly could do with losing a few pounds!
The 22 yr old would probably prefer to be in but not possible for 2 weeks as we're moving!

Got a 22yr old and a 34yr old living out both very fit, sound and uptown weight. The younger of the two is rugged up, the older has the a better coat on than any rug. They have acces to shelter, plenty of haylage plus hard feed with there supp's.

i have a 23yr old section a, she lives out with access to a stable, that she never goes in ! Not rugged as she hates it, but has as much hay as she wants, and has just started on small feeds.

I've got a 30 yo, mostly TB mare who lives out and has done for several years, she cannot abide being in a stable any more and also stiffens badly if in. She is well fed and rugged, no field shelter or stables but natural shelter and she is happy as larry!

I had my oldie put down last easter after she sadly broke her hock in the field aged 26, but she lived out her whole life. She hated coming in and would always have gammy eyes and filled stiff legs by the morning if she spent a night inside. She got quite arthritic in her later years but living out always kept her much more comfortable. She was always bright as a button even in howling gales, blizzards and temps of -15! She coped with it all quite happily as long as she had a good rug and a mountain of hay to keep her warm!

I had another pony when I was young who lived to 33 as well and he lived out for his whole life too, again, he hated being shut in, so we used to leave the stable door open and the only time he'd ever go in was to escape the flies in the summer. :D

Mine started living out 2 years ago at the age of 30 and he's never looked better or been happier, I honestly believe that if he'd carried on being stabled all winter he wouldnt be here now as his joints would be too stiff, he and my other other 2 ponies have a huge warm shelter to go in...they are well rugged up and fed with plenty of hay and haylage. At 22 he should cope with no problem at all...

I have a 20 year old and a 30 year old out 24/7. They stiffen up and the big lads legs fill if they are kept in for more than a few hours.

My first pony came to me when he was 27, and passed away when he was 35. The whole time he lived with me, I think he came in a handful of times when my dad's horse was unhappy out (he was only a bit younger). After Bill died, my pony lived out 24/7, 365 days a year.

He was a mongrel, Welsh mountain pony-type horse, coat like a thick bearskin and perfectly happy out in all weather.

Old Picasso does

If anyone could suggest how I could get my 24 year old to live out, I would be incredibly grateful. Diva knickers will only stay out for 1/2 day and it was an epic fail when I tried previously. Mare is TB x Cob so should really not have a problem!
