I have had to have my horses hind shoes removed as he has crumbled the inside of the hoof wall away and there is nothing to nail the shoe to, well, there is a bit but he is sore if the farrier tries.
I will there fore have to compete without them, he mainly does dressage, does anyone else compete without hind shoes and if so just dressage or do you jump as well?
Does it restrict hacking on the roads?

I know loads of horses who do all manner of things without hind shoes. So long as the horse is comfortable, I can't see what difference it makes.

I dont event without shoes but our racehorses never ran with hind shoes on every - in order to save themselves a little from striking into themselves.

I compete in all disciplines without any shoes, mainly showing and dressage but do a bit of WH, SJ and a bit of XC.

He has far more grip than he ever did with shoes

I used to compete my Welsh Cob with no shoes at all, did so for 2 years before I started doing more jumping on grass and he began slipping and losing a bit of confidence. Thats the only problem is you cant use studs obviously.

During the winter I take off all shoes, and compete 3 horses - BSJA etc. no problem. I dont hack on roads though, only through fields.

Both Diva and Blits only have fronts on and compete in BD, there feet are really good and cope absolutely fine even on hard ground.

Both also jump at home but not competitively.

Oskar only has fronts on. Hind feet are pretty good and never has a problem, he hacks out happily even over stony ground. I put back shoes on him briefly but took them off and didn't bother with them again - waste of money, luckily my farrier agrees!

Blue only has fronts on and has only had fronts for about 2yrs now.

He competes at unaff dressage and SJing no problems. Also hacks out on roads no problems!

Woody only has front shoes on but she does have very good feet, she hacks about 6 times a week on all terain without a problem. Show jumps to about 1m.

Tilla the pony we produced never had back shoes on either, again she did simular hacking and a week of PC camp we only put back shoes on her when we sold her (so people didnt think she was difficult to shoe)

Atty has no shoes on what so ever and competes nicely, have discovered he's fine on grass or a surface, but long slippy grass I'd worry about a bit.

Ive taken my boys hind shoes off, and he was fine for a few weeks, but has now got sore and hobbly

None of mine have hind shoes on............saves loads of money!!!

I have one competing at BD Inter 1 and all hack out fine but I am careful not to do too much trotting on the roads. Not 'cos they're sore but if they get a bit idle,

, they wear their toes out!

Our 2 youngsters just have fronts on, and we are hacking at the mo on lanes, just am carfeul not to do too much!
I have every intention of keeping them like this as long as possible!!

They were without all round but one started getting a bit footy and the other was fine but really wearing his toes so we thought it was best to put some on!

I compete without shoes and have evented up to pre-novice without any problems. I would say that if you are doing dressage which would be mostly on a surface you wont even notice he's not got hinds on.

I must say that whenever I've been to Oldencraig a large numer of the dressage divas there don't have hinds on.

Mine 7 year old is barefoot behind always has been. He does BD and now is showjumping.

I plan to do the same with my 3 year old when the time comes, but her feet aren't as good so may not be able to.
