Do any of you wear glasses when riding/competing?

I've always rode in mine, remember when I first got them age about 9 not riding in them at first but soon realised I couldn't see very well without. Worn them for everything dressage, jumping, xc, hunting don't think I've ever lost them falling off. Got a bit of a cut from them once I think but never anything bad. I do have contacts but can't put them in my self so not practical for every day but occassionaly wears them for competing as find when I get too hot they slides down my nose, is annoying in rain as well. Looking at having laser surgery eventually as my mum had it done and wished she'd had it done sooner.

Can't see the problem with dressage in glasses tbh I wear mine every time I ride else I wouldn't see the horse's ears! Hacking show jumping xc etc.

I always ride in my glasses and I like the protection they give you from kicked up mud & flying insects. I use contacts sometimes but not around the horses as I end up getting bits in my eyes and then rubbing the contact out.

Gosh if I never rode in my specs I'd be a serious danger

SJ dressage XC hacking, in fact all the time since I was a kid

I've falling off more times than you can count and never even had a broken pair..:D

That's seem silly to think you could not ride in glasses, why would you not..?

I once nearly lost the sight in my left eye from riding in glasses. It was a freak fall, my horse spooked and as I fell her knee went into my eye. The frame of my glasses bent up inside my eye socket and damaged the nerves and muscles that work the eye. Not being able to see out of that eye for three weeks was enough of a scare for me and ive never worn them since. Had to learn the dressage markers!

I have to wear specs, blind as a bat otherwise. Used to wear contacts, but years ago got some debris in my eye while riding indoors at a competition. Tried to rub my eye to clear it and the lens broke in my eye and scratched the lens of my eye. Painful in the extreme and I had a 3 hour drive home as well. Never worn lenses since and always ride and compete in my glasses. Took weeks and weeks to clear up and altered my sight as well.

I got contacts and used them just for riding. Then I hit a snag when doing Trec, as I take my glasses OFF to read, even more so the older I get. So then I had to wear glasses for riding, and I just got out of the habit of wearing contacts, although I always do for showing. I should get back into it really, as it was not being able to see the difference between B and E in a dressage test that alerted me to the fact that I needed glasses.

I am short sighted, if I am wearing glasses I need to take them off to read. The optician has prescribed me contacts so that one is a distance eye, the other is a reading eye. This doesn't work for everyone, but works for me :D

I occasionally wear glasses to ride either when I forget to swap them for my contacts or if I have sore eyes. Usually I wear my contacts but mashnut makes a good point when I had a horrific fall I apparently had 3 surgeons trying to work out how to get my lenses out until they found someone who wore them! I had had them in for ages though as it was only when my husband remembered to tell them that they realised I had them in!

I can't see a thiing without my glasses
I can't remember not riding in them tbh. The only problem I sometimes have is in the summer if its really hot and I get sweaty - they slip down my nose :D lol.

I have fallen off several times... I had one rotational and it bent them a little and cute my nose, but nothing else. The ones I have now are the thick black ones though, so I don't think they would hold up as well!

I wear my glasses all the time to ride (contacts arent much use because i have an astigmatism which cant be put into contact lenses)- my justification is im not legal to drive without them on so why should i ride!!
I have a pair of sports frames, they werent expensive- free actually from vision express in their 2 for 1 offer last year!!
They dont move anywhere and theyre really light and comfortable :)

Actually you can get contact lenses that also correct astigmatism now, these are very new. I tried them but as I am not a spring chicken, I still need 'reading' glasses for small print so cba and have continued with normal lenses which correct my vision sufficiently for skiing/riding.

I always wear contact lenses doing everything with the horses, including riding. I used to wear glasses but found them a bit of a faff and lost count of the amount of times I knocked them off or dropped them whilst taking them off to wipe the lenses clean, whilst riding was the only time I got on with them! :o
I love my contacts, once they're in I just leave them be. Think its just a case of finding what works best for you.

I rode with both glasses and contacts for years and had problems with both so three years ago I had lazer eye surgery and it was the best thing I've ever done. I love riding and being able to see. :)

Im ridiculously squeamish about my eyes. I cant touch them, I cant let others near them, I cringe if someone touches theirs while Im talking to them *shudder*
So contact lenses arent really an option for me
I wear glasses to ride :)
I used to take them off before tacking up, so I had a bit of time for my eyes to adjust before I got on board. Now I just keep them on and its fine.
Ive never had an issue with them yet! :D

Hi,
I have just started using contact lenses (at 40!) so anyone can try it, its just a matter of wanting to do it enough.

I have astigmatism and it is corrected by the lenses 'torric lenses'I think they are called.

I hate the few occasions that I have to wear glasses now, such restricted vision!

I wear my varifocals but am often told by instructors to keep my head up, look up etc etc. If I do I am looking through the wrong bit of the glasses and its blurry - so I have to drop my head!

I have been wearing gas permanable hard contact lenses for 37 years I am short sighted and have astigmatism so lenses to correct this are not new but the toric soft lenses have only been around for 10 years or so but as i understand it the hard lenses will give you better vision. i have been toying with the idea of riding with my glasses due to various issues with lenses but am also nervous re them breaking if I fall off etc I mainly hunt and dont think anyone in my hunt wears glasses.

I thought that Andrew Nicolson used to wear them when eventing? May be wrong though!

And here's a smaller one from London 2012

I always bore glasses when I used to ride, and as shown by the replies on this thread, if you're unlucky you can be in trouble no matter whether you're wearing glasses or contact lenses. However, I've also heard about people who doesn't need glasses or contact lenses, that has had accidents involving their eyes when riding, so regardless if you don't need glasses or if you do use glasses or contact lenses, I don't think you can do anything more than trying to be as careful as possible.

:)
