Aim for as fit as possible as there is a lot of hoss to tie-up
A friend's cob went last year, we thought he was pretty fit and the rider pulled him up about half way round and had taken it easy, but he tied-up afterwards. We're all going next year (two cobs) once we're sure everything is fully fit. As to the cross=country, we can't wait to get the little cob out there - he loves hacking and jumping so effectively combing the two should be a hoot
my lightweight cob will hunt all day - he's 21!! I did up to novice eventing and Newcomers BSJA. He always made the time PN but struggled at Novice as he was only 15'2 He was easy to keep fit as he almost did it himself. I could ride him 7 days a week, and he always came back for more. He would jump anything, and give anything a lead.
A hunting cob is the ideal hunter i think, even tho I have a more normal hunter. That busy spanking trot, keen as mustard, good hooves and low maintenance if they are hogged, no plaiting unless you want to keep the hair.
And easier to get off and on to do gates, - or just on if you fall off!
I've seen so many people out hunting on cobs, and have to say, most of them seemed to have big grins on their faces, happy to try anything, and just generally having a ball (and that was just the horses!)
I'm not a cob person, but I can't argue with the fun those horses and riders always seem to be having.
Yes, excellent hunters, not so sure about XC, although it depends on what level of course. They are not generally fast enough to make the time for BE eventing and some lack scope, and Pre Novice is about their limit.
Of course, there is always the exceptional individual.
Oh Yes! They are fantastic hunters!
Although not my stamp/type of horse. I have been hunting one for 5 seasons & he has done 2 days a week all day long, all season long & knows his job inside out.
You will get left behind going up long hills but soon catch up again.
Oh & they can jump as well!
Ahhhh they are fab I love mine and he does it all and loves it to!!! He could probably have done really well with another rider but he got stuck with me from a 5 year old but he does averything I want him to. I am happy jumping xc/ht's at 2'9 which is easy for him when in the right mood. He will go over anything out hunting though as will I as I just feel so safe on him and know he is more then capable. I was never a cob person went from a tb to a maxi, there are good ones out there and if you find one you wont regret it!!
