Just out of interest really, do you let your dogs out near your horses when the horses are loose?

I have have one horse that will chase dogs in an agressive manner if he is loose, but tied up he just ignores them, his field is right beside a dog school and it soesn't bother him. he like puppy mornings and leans right over to say hello its just if they are in his field, so obviously i dont take mine in, they are well behaved and sit by the gate until i call them, when he is on a lead rope no issues or if we meet them riding fine

Anyone else have dog/horse issues?

my crazy collie heards my horse but he just ignores him altho other horses in the field chase him away and my collie thinks this is a great game!!!
i think each horse is prob different when it comes to tolerating dogs my horse is a star he puts up with a lot and does nt bat an eye lid!

My crazy dog loves running abut with the horses, in fact at times I think she thinks she is one. The horses just ignore her! She also likes to walk along the road leading them!

My new yard has five dogs which run loose all the time and are never a problem, and at least two other liveries take their dogs up as well as me. I never let mine off the lead though (greyhounds) because (a) I cannot guarantee they wont chase horses but more importantly (b) the place is full of cats/chickens/guinea pigs all of which they would try and murder

my mare is good with dogs, (goes hunting) and doesn't mind the hounds even if they go through her legs, would be a different story if one went in her field, I have seen her chase phesants out of her space, even murdered a lamb once

My mare has hunted so dogs don't bother her. My sec a tolerates dogs when he is on the lead rein or ridden but if they annoy him he will kicj them. In the field if a dog goes anywhere near him he will chase it. I don't have my dog loose in the field when they are loose. After reading about horrible accidents in a thread here recently, i am even more careful with my dog.

My little dog and one of my horses are best of friends

Popple crawls up to her on the floor and rolls over to have Be blow on her tummy

I always take my dog Bruno down to the yard and have done since he was a pup. Lolly pretty much ignores him and he can even go in the stable with her and she doesn't mind, but Poppy pulls faces and chases him sometimes in the field and she would defo have a go at him if he went into the stable with her. He always stays in the stable when we go out on a hack, but I have to bribe him with a Piggy Pigs Ear. lol

That is so sweet lol My older horse is ok with the dogs but then she is a bit too arthritic to chase them!

Ok to start the first post without a my or an I...

Speaking generally it depends on the dog and the horse. Some horse's are pretty chilled about our other four legged friends. Some dogs are pretty chilled about horse. These 2 mix.

Any other combination is an accident waiting to happen.

We have dogs at our yard but YO has made it clear that they are their at their owners risk, any damages will not be for horse owners to pay. I cringe when they run round the back of my mare as she can be super sharp when in season. I usually say to them and they call the dog away...it lasts all of 5 seconds then it's back around the back legs again

On a more contentious point do children and horses mix, they are often more unruley than the dogs!

I just don't have the time to separate the dogs and the horses. The dogs always come to the yard and infact as soon as I mention the word "horses" they have glued themselves to the door!

I also take both dogs riding with me everyday and luckily for me I don't have to go on roads - however, the dogs are trained that when I do go up the lane, I just shout "CAR" and they both go and sit on the verge - very well trained gundogs (stop and recall whistle also instilled)!!.

Neither horses nor dogs take any notice of each other. It might sound that I am lucky but actually I think that with the everyday lifestyle the animals soon become accustomed to it all

I don't risk it now at all. Having a mare who previously showed no signs of being bothered by dogs at all, in the field or yard. From lurchers, labs, terriers and one day decided for no apparent reason to go in for the kill and she MEANT it, took me and a friend, not to mention the dog, completely by surprise. Missed the dogs head with her forefeet by an inch or so twice and then turned to finish the job with her back feet. If we had not been so close and managed to intervene the dog would have been dead. And this by a mare who was 'used' to dogs and 'didn't bat an eye' at dogs for as long as we had known her.

I just keep the dogs shut in the stable if the horses are out and only let the dogs out now if the horses are in, or it's in the 4x4 they stay or at home.

My two get on great, just back from the yard where, as usual, pup has been running about the stable with horse snuffling him occasionally while I groom. A bit too well actually as now pup has no fear of horses!

Dogs on the yard don't bother me, it's the crap that the dogs drop & owners don't see & remove that annoys me. Some seem to think that their dogs are under control because they come when they are called...err no! They are well behaved if you tell them to stay & they stay there until told to do otherwise. When they start charging around the yard, in & out stables, around horses that aren't particularly good with dogs it's annoying. At the entrance to out yard it says stables....it doesn't say kennels!....Oh & yes I am a dog owner, a responsible one.

intresting post, i never thought about it, but now that you mention it, when i trim a piece of hoof i just through it to the dog, so i think there must be a dog in most yards, i never really notice them.

My collie herds my beast but tends to leave the others alone, she has nipped his heels a couple of times and he puts up with a lot, he does sometimes kick out at her if he gets fed up, other wise he doesn't bother too much about dogs unless he feels threatened, in which case he will kick and has caught a coupe of dogs which were off the lead out of control running round his back legs barking while I was riding him, it is a bit funny though that most of the time he doesnt bother about her in his field, but now and again he has chased her out, must just have been in a bad mood that particular time.

It all depends on the horse and dog. Im not sure i would trust any horse with any dog, just in case.
my mare would tolerate them but did kick a bull massiff puppy clear across the yard once and would try and bite the dogs if the came near but when the old collie tried to herd her and bite her fetlocks she ignored him.

NO ..even though our lab is grand with horses when their on the yard i wont let her into a field with them....

When i was a kid myself and my cousins took a shortcut home through a field with 2 horses we knew in it and who never had a problem with our dog before...
we ended up stuck up a tree for hours while the horses attempted to kill our dog who kept running towards us instead of home(he wasnt the brightest

)....
they never showed any aggression towards dogs before that day(they were hunted every season and were never bothered by the presence of dogs when they were in the yard)
...my uncles pony also likes to chase dogs..doublebarrel then and stomp is the normal for any dog that dares to enter his field...but he has no issues with dogs when hes in the yard...mind you all the sheepdogs now give him a wide berth regardless of where he is
