Do fly rugs actually do anything?

Know of someone's horse who had a hornet get inside the fly rug

Bought mine one that was like a normal rug as knew he wouldn't "do" one of the combo ones. Well he didn't "do" this one either and went rampaging round the stable when I went in with it, finally managed to get it on but one of the staff who used to work there tried to put it on the next day he wouldn't let her near him with it so it went to the second hand store.

He also won't wear a fly mask!

Both my boys are have full fly rugs on all summer. They have a lovely silver mesh that covers most of them(they look like they are in full armour lol). They have both previously had sarcoids and having rugs on helps to prevent them getting new ones.I cover their nethers in a combination of sudacrem and teetree oil which keeps the flies off them. They are so much happier with their rugs on.

Is your product working if his sheath was bitten, i have found neem oil to be brilliant and when i have finished whiping the sheaths and under bellies and behind elbows and under neck i just finish the wipe over the body and their coats are not oily.

Yes the products work great but if i have turnout in the morning I have to apply it the night before, so the effectiveness is reduced. I have neem oil that i add to my homemade products, great stuff.

Well ours were out without their rugs yesterday as a new friend went in the field and we figured it might help them bond a bit better if they can properly groom - my sister's cob has a couple of big bites and my mare has multiple big (talking 2-3 cm round) lumps all over from fly bites - this is why I use rugs

Both my horses have fly rugs on night & day atm the midges/tiny black flies have been terrible so far this year, my mare has a HY fly rug which is in its 4th summer, both are combos and have belly flaps so i am convinced they do help.
