Do Friesians really command such a price premium?

Just window shopping, and I come across this

http://www.horsemart.co.uk/advert/4_yrs_16_0_hh_black_friesian_yorkshire/54094

Beautiful example of a breed, but quite a large price tag for a 4 yr old that hasn't really done a lot.

After all, they are just dutch barge horses, are they not?

mmmm...very nice indeed!

They are a bit of a fashion accessory now, I think that tends to result in over inflated prices, however it is a nice example of the breed and if people are prepared to pay a high price for a mediocore (sp?) example of the breed then these people can probably expect to get a good price for a better horse irrelevant of whether its done anything.

Looks like a nice horse overall and if it has a sensible temperament that would increase the price...now add to that that it looks like it has just stepped out of a fairytale book and that should be an extra one or two thousand pounds!!!

They seem to be very adaptable - I've know the same horse ride/drive/sidesaddle/dressage/show.

You do find crap ones....at overinflated prices too, but thats like any horse.

I normally dont like them - but I have to say I think this is one of the best examples Ive seen. What i dont understand is when people put huge price tags on partbred Friesians who just look like really really common badly put together cobs.

Disclaimer - Im not saying cobs are common, just that these part breds are poor examples.

Ditto this!! They're not really for me, but even I can see the beauty in this one (not that I'd pay that for her mind!!).

I would imagine that this being such a good, papered, MARE is a lot to do with her price.

Very nice indeed, but if you look, they have another 3 year old for the same price thats warmblood, so I would say the seller just likes pricing high!!

I do like them, but I wouldn't actually aim to go out and buy one - I can't stand long feathers, and it would be criminal to clip those hairy legs!!

Freisians demand such a high price because of their versatility and usually uncomplicated personality. They are classed as a 'cold blood' which means that they are much more chilled about stuff than the dutch warmbloods. They have particularly good paces, make excellent dressage horses but are incredibly versatile in all spheres. They are intelligent and highly trainable, truly enjoy working and have wonderful temperaments. There are not many good freisian stallions in this country yet so most have to be imported from abroad, hence the slightly higher price bracket. As you can see I am definitely a Freisian Admirer.

ditto dawnrider as a owner myself of two of them
if you did find a friesian with a lower price tag then i would be very worried the only ones you would find with a low price tag would be half breeds , ones with no dutch papers or ones with health problems
what would you say on my one

some do actually get bleached in the sun

Hello

Well I own a partbred Freisian x ID he for me is my perfect horse. I am told he is very well put together the ID gives him big chest and big ears but the rest is Freisian. I get comments because he is a large all black horse with a high head carriage and is very striking looking.

However his breed was not in fashion when I aquired him and his breeding was a happy mishap I got him because he is 100 percent in traffic which to me as a happy hacker is the most important thing.

The Fresian horse is used in a lot of films, Lady Hawk been one of many and I think it has given the breed a lot of publicity. But like most trends it will change and the price will drop, when I first started with horses to have a coloured cob was only for travellers now look how popular they are. I love coloured cobs as well by the way.

I don't get the attraction to them really and if I got my hands on one I'd end up pulling it's mane because that mane would drive me mad

I agree, for that reason she is over priced. She looks brown not black and in my opinion as a Friesian owner i think she is a poor example of the breed because of her colour.

I guess the fact that there are only about 40,000 Friesians in the world makes them carry a higher value. They are lovely horses, fantastic looks with super temperments.

I went to view one of her friesians a month ago for my friend-thought i recognised the pictures. Nice girl, normally sells warmbloods but she said she was branching out. Agree with being nice level headed horses. My friend rode a newly backed 4 yr old in his paddock with other horses. He wasnt even bothered. Shame, as he had sweet itch so decided against. Girl was very honest, and certainly knew her stuff. I had never seen one before, but he had such presence. Was 16h but looked alot bigger with his beautiful stocky neck. I can see why they appeal to lots of ppl

Yes, pure bred and properly registered Fresians command incredibly high prices. They are highly favoured as driving horses.

Am I being silly or.. but should Friesians not get that big? I'm sure I've read somewhere that a true Friesian stands around 15hh. Or am I making this up?

They are such beautiful horses! I am currently working on a commissoned painting of someone's Friesian stallion and he is absolutely divine! That mare is very striking indeed, if their temperaments are as good as people say then I might be tempted one day!

We have one and he is the best tempered animal and so non stressy compared to our pink papered Hannoverian who is a real stress head... lol

I think you will find that the ones that are imported from U.S.A. are generally quite a bit bigger than the ones imported from Holland like our one....
