OH has started riding lessons and is really taking to it like a duck to water! He rode as a kid and has ridden mine a few times but has now decided that he wants to learn how to ride properly.

So we've been given the opportunity of him riding a horse at my yard a few times a week but have been looking at loan horses. We wouldn't want to buy him something for a year or two as he'd probably want something completely different then!

Really seems as though these horses are as rare as rocking horse poo though.

Anyone ever find one? Doesn't have to be great on the flat, but good to hack out (alone or in company) and a hunter stamp of a horse - over 16.3 and atleast a medium weight hunter......

I know they are advertising hunter hirelings for loan over the summer period in Glos can get you the number if interested?

At least if you loan then the owner will be very honest with you. If they say its a novice ride its 99% likely to be, because its not in their best interest to lie, whereas buying is a whole different ball game, and saying its a novice ride means nothing, as people are prepared to lie. I got a fab pony on loan who was brilliant for myself and my novice daughters. They are out there, but it may take a while to find, good luck.

They are rare to loan I think, because not that many people want to loan a horse to a total novice and risk devaluing the horse or have it getting into bad habits. Obviously when they do come up for loan they are then like gold dust.

Word of mouth will be the best way to find a horse like this, or what about your OH doing one of the loan schemes at a local riding school - where you pay for the horse's keep and then they look after it and use it in lessons.

I think they are out there and I think word of mouth could be the best, let every one you can know you are looking for something. I think sometimes there are people out there who have a horse that's actually not doing anything (for various reasons) and don't consider loaning until someone mentions it and then they think "oh, i have a horse that i could loan!"

My friend was looking for a pony to loan for her daughter and it was proving difficult and then she's gone and found one that was just in the next village and that was just through someone she knew who knew of someone who had a pony coming back off a loan. It's amazing what you can find right under your nose.

thanks guys - Sally could you PM me the number?

I don't think a riding school loan is practical - I have two already and don't want to be trapsing over to another yard .... good idea though x
