Horse went lame last week, strong pulse in knee and fetlock, no swelling, just a hot hoof. Soaked and poulticed him up, he came right with no abscess appearing. He went out in the field, a few days later, he goes lame again, same symptoms... have soaked it for a few days and poulticed it and its gone again, he is sound again!

Can't figure out what is going on.... can abscesses go away without actually bursting out?

It is a little bit yes... Trimmer is coming a week today. She is a new trimmer, so when she came last time, she didn't want to take too much off, not knowing my horse's feet and all, so they are a little long. Do I keep poulticing to try and force it to break?

This happened to my mare and the farrier removed a section of hoof wall to expose the abscess (it was obvious where it was though as you could see the gap in the white line). It was never going to pop as it was just moving sideways around the hoof. She was sound after it was done.

I don't know if this is the case with your horse though. Hopefully the trimmer will find out what's going on.

My mare came in lame with a hot hoof, poulticed and box rested. Symptoms dissapeared, vet checked over and said it was a ligament strain. 2 days later went broken-leg lame with the abscess, had farrier dig it out. Think it can take time but I'd get it looked at.
