My YO was unhappy that I put my horse out this morning because it was drizzling and a bit windy (the field is well drained, the horse was rugged and isnt silly, it was clearing up and I had checked the forecast) - its lovely sushine now, so I'm glad I did put him out!!!

Fair enough if the weather is really bad, or the fields are too wet, but it really wasnt that bad today!!

Only a few weeks ago, the YO didnt want the horses left out long because it was to hot/too many flies.....

Do you think horses get intolerant to the weather if they are only allowed out in good weather? Can this cause problems with riding in bad weather if he learns that rain = stay inside?

i think they should be out if they have shelter from sun/wind/rain etc...not necesarily an actual field shelter but hedges/trees....

they aren't made of icing sugar..so little chance of them melting!!! LOL!!

I used to turn mine out even if it was torrential, aslong as there is some shelter, and they are rugged, and warm, then they should be out I say.

I dont know if they "get used to it" or if some horses are just wimpier than others!

I do think some people think horses are really pathetic creatures.

I really am surprised they made it to this century without us

Mine are out and unrugged and are fluffing up nicely. They are still alive too

Glad to hear its not only me that thinks that... unfortunatley the YO isnt very flexible...

They went and got the horses in just after I left the yard... and apparently mine was a right sh1t to bring in (probs cos he wanted to stay out!!!), so I am in for an ear lashing when I get there this eve!!! The YO will no doubt say it proves her point that it causes problems if they are out in bad weather and will be even worse about it now!!! Argh.... he was angellic to take out and was fine when I checked him as I left the yard!!!

He probs never going to allowed in the field again now (despite being angellic every other day for the past however many months.....)!!!

I'm not sure about them becoming intolerant, but they'll probably be much more sensitive to the cold and rain if they rarely go out in it. Chex goes out everyday regardless of weather - the only day in 9 years he hasn't been out was when the snow was so deep it was above the top of the fences and he sank to his belly on the way to the field lol

I think with a yard owner like that I'd be moving!
Horses do become intolerant if they are rugged up too much, we had one DIY who put three (yes three) polywarm rugs on her unclipped horse and the first time she took it outside rugless to ride it the poor thing stood and shivered.
Eventually it became so intolerant of cold they abandoned riding it and "retired" it.
They are horses not hot house flowers so yes, they should go out as much as is practicable, rugged when needed without when it's warm.
I would question the sort of bossiness this YO is exhibiting, remember you're paying her she isn't totally in charge of how you want your horse kept..
If she is then are you sure you want that sort of control over your own animal?

They are all shut in again today - its sunny!!!! But apparently, too windy.... ARGH!

I am moving stable (and field) within my yard on Saturday - off the main yard, so out of sight of the YO, so I will at least be able to pop him out while I am mucking out etc.... which is better than nothing

I am looking to move (for other reasons as well).... but there is a severe stabling shortage at the mo, specially for a box big enough for a 17.1!!! So we will probs have to stick it out till spring... I really dont think its good for either of us as it is tho (but at the same time, dont want to unsettle him by moving too much, so its tricky)!!!
