Do horses understand fences when passing other horses?

My lad is very good to hack - most traffic is not an issue but horses running alongside a fence will set him off. Actually, any animals running about close by/alongside (cows, llama, guinea fowl have all caused us issues!) So he definately doesn’t think a fence (or even a fence with a big hedge) is always sufficient protection, so you’ve got a clever and/or brave ‘ginger one’ right there!

Mine doesnt trust running cows behind a fence, as some broke out 2 years ago when we went past. She will happily go past the milking herd and the expectant mums fields, but is tense going past any field with faster moving daft young cattle.
I don't think she has met any sheep yet, not got them round here.
