So now I'm really confused! All the threads about OCD have really made me concerned about buying a German warmblood. Can't find a home bred one. If I go with imported how far do you go with Xrays at a vetting and will they pick up any issues anyway? I want to do dressage - should I really be thinking about a different breed altogether?!

what about other warmbloods ie dutch or czech, polish the latter 2 are cheaper too. I'm well impressed with my czech wb he is everything anyone could want

I haven't seen any of the ocd threads but I have a German Oldenburg for 4 years now, and he is lovely - really lovely and sound!
He has a 'ginger' atitude sometimes, but he does eveything I ask of him: Here he is.......Otto

why can't you find a home bred one? There are loads of quality British bred warmbloods - at better prices than imported European ones....

As far as I understand it, OCD was more of a problem in the 80s and 90s than it is now - certain bloodlines seemed to be predisposed towards it but now people understand feeding/producing youngstock better, there seems to be a lower incidence of developmental problems than there used to be.

Vettings are only a snapshot of the horse on a given day and X rays are only as valid as the competence of the person interpreting them.....

With regards to another breed - do you mean another nationality of warmblood - or something completely different, like a TB?? What level are you planning to compete in dressage?

I don't think it's the nationality per se - just some family lines are more predisposed.

I'm assuming you're looking for a youngster if you're concerned about OCD??

I know of a British bred warmblood for sale competing medium, training Adv Med + if you're interested!

I have a Dutch warmblood (imported) who have I owned for 12 1/2 years and he has been healthy 99% of the time.

I also have a 4 year old British bred Hanoverian who is lovely, I have only had him since the summer and he passed the vet although I didnt have him x-rayed as the vet had no doubt that he was in good health.

Warmbloods of other nationalities could originate from the same lines that are prone to OCD, just something to think about. Does anyone know which lines they are?

When I bought my Hano, the vet suggested I had his hocks x-rayed as he said they can be prone to OCD. His were clear, and 4 years on he's still sound. I've never bought directly from abroad (mine was bred in Germany, but I bought him in the UK) so I can't help you there, but I know I would feel more comfortable buying in the UK.

What you can do, is if you find one you like abroad, get the x-rays done and show them to your vet at home. Or take a vet with you to the sales!

If you are buying a youngster then by 18 months it would have got ocd if it was going to get it. Happens that my Oldenburg filly has had ocd in one hock. My vet/surgeon who worked in Germany said it is really a routine thing with many warmbloods and is not the big deal that the British try and make it out to be. Pm me if you like.

Don't know anything of value regarding ocd, but I have a german Oldenburg (called Fred - hence my username) and he is amazing. Lovely temperament, and captivating to look at.

I would buy another oldenburg.
