I've got a Diahatsu Fourtrak that I've had for 7 years, it's never ever let me down & I really like the car, however....

It's 15 years old this year and me & OH feel I deserve a newer car with mod cons & a bit of luxery, which, although I've never driven one, I quite like the look of the Nissan Terrano.

Has anyone got a NT? what are they like? Fuel consumption etc.

With my Diahatsu I do 280 miles on a full tank of derv

We're on our second Fourtrak; they're brilliant and would have another in a flash but son has just bought a Terrano which he is very pleased with so far; he has towed with it but not horses and it went well. I haven't even had a ride in it yet so can't say much but OH has been both passenger and driver and likes it a lot except winkers and washers are the opposite way around - confusing for the poor old man!

It can also shift a bit too apparently!

YES DO IT !!!

I am on my3rd Terrano and they are brilliant for towing and much more driver friendly than a Fourtrak, IMO.

I get 350 miles out of a tank but less if I do a lot of towing. I've had a SWB and a LWB and they tow two horses in a IW 510 very easily.

God that's good!

I get 280 miles without towing!

Your post has given me a rush of "DO IT"!!

My other alternative is to get a newer Diahatsu but they stopped making them in 2002. I have found one or 2 2001 models for sale but they're always a million miles away!

Are you on your 3rd because you keep up with newer models? - Not because they keep braking down!!?

I have a Nissan Terrano and a Ford Maverick (made my Nissan)

FABULOUS tow cars. Driver like a dream, very car like to drive. We're about to upgrade ours as they're both M reg, but we can't decide whether to go for a newer Terrano or the Nissan Patrol.

I tow two horses in mine with an Ifor Williams 505. Only ever had one brake fade issue, but that was when the new dampner on the trailer was sticking (baaad hubby hadn't greased it enough) so the trailer wasn't braking for itself.

I've changed mainly for high mileage reasons as I wanted to sell them before I got to 100k. However I got the 2nd one because it was the same colour as my trailer !!

Surprisingly the SWB and LWB have the same towing capacity of 2800kgs. You'd automatically think the LWB would be capable of towing slightly more.

I also get 350 miles out of a tank but have no idea how many to the gallon that is as we purchase white diesel in bulk on the farm and the nozzle doesn't count the volume used.

Well, my 4x4 before last was a Fourtrak, and I miss mine and regret selling it. I dont think you'll find anything tougher or more reliable nowadays. I have a much more modern Isuzu now, and I trust it a lot less than the Fourtrak. They also have surprisingly good fuel economy, I used to get 30mpg + from mine.

spitchwick are you actually from Spitchwick...a very random and little known (but lovely place) if you are!

I know it well!

go through the auto trader for spek on the terrano, and fourtrack tht will give you mpg, and list of common faults. i had terrano, lovely car to drive, lots of umph very easy to drive, not at all clumbersome, unlike my parents disco which had the turning circle of a double decker. of the two the disco was better towing. only fault in relation to towing with terrano is they have rather small break cylinders/pads or sumfin so when i bought it i was warned to be aware of the wear on them. my only experience with dihatsu's is when my dad towed the most enormous mobile homes with one we had up a 1:3 hill, i was terrfied watching him set off but it blasted up, the mobile home was 4 times bigger so im sure it was well illegal!

I have a 2.7td LWB Terrano and really like it, it tows great, I find it pretty good on fuel for general running around, easy to drive, air con for summer, bit juicyer on towing, but then you cant have it all ways and I sometimes overtake up hill with a double trailer and pony in tow.
Nissan main dealer service price was very reasonable I thought at £230.00 for a medium service, I can recommend one, mines done 99,000 miles, starts immediate any weather, no smoke and goes quick if you hoof it.

My Daihatsu is also 15yrs old, and I'm hoping above hope that it'll last a few more years as I can't afford to buy anything else!

It passed the 100k mark just before Christmas!

Mine does much less miles to the tank than yours - only 150, but we have such heavy traffic down this way that it's stop start, stop start on nearly every journey and if I get 5th gear out of it once in 10 miles I'm pleased!

I'm definately of that ilk that says if it ain't broke, don't mend it!

We love our Fourtrak. Why did they ever stop making them, they are great. Gotta admit though when ours was getting old (it was a G reg) we updated it for a newer fourtrak and the difference is massive. I think from L reg up they are on independant suspension, the older ones were on leaf springs. It makes me realise why horses travel better in trailers with no leaf springs. We used to bounce up the motorway! Never let us down though.
