Should I get a new horse?

I’m in a similar position, but two horses currently. I’m going to carry on until the spring. Possibly thinking if I can find someone else’s pony to ride - benefit of being small.

Might it be nice to try stuff away from horses, that’s my plan anyhow.

I'd personally try and stick with what you have and work out a way forward with perhaps better rehab facilities, maybe work in conjunction with a good chiro/physio or get the vet to see if there is more vet intervention that might help better the horse.

You never know, you might end up buying another horse only for that to fail too. There are no guarantees with horses as you know.

Thank you, another voice of reason.

Is he a good hack ?
If he is I would try to find someone who would enjoy doing that on him that takes the pressure off you in winter .
You could keep on the postural stuff that he need in work or not because you can’t do nothing with a horse like that but let the sharer do other stuff .
I have a horse who has no job with us but he’s a lovely boy he arrived as a frightened angry nervous boy I will never part with him as I admire how he embraced change a friend uses him ,he’s happy in his home and my friend helps out in lots of ways .
If yours hacks you will find someone who can’t have there own horse who will love him .
Then of course get out and buy a new one .

Ok token American here so take everything with a grain of salt.

Questions:

1) What level have you competed through yourself? How long ago? Were you confident?

2) Is the Irish one particularly good in any one of the 3 phases or just average all the way around?

3) When you close your eyes and think about what you hope to accomplish in horse sports, what do you see?

4) What is better.....A green horse's first xc school where they "get it" and come away brimming with confidence or a rosette when you accomplished more than you thought you could do?

Thoughts:

1) You are SOOOO lucky to be able to event so cheaply. Hang onto the 80 pound entries. It costs us $350 USD on average.

2) I have 4 and only 2 are rideable but 2 are excellent best friends to the 2 rideable ones and add value in my "good" horses quality of life that I can never thank them enough for.

3) Could you share lease something more experienced yourself to have a bit more fun getting out and going and letting you enjoy a made horse for a stint before getting a new greener horse. And maybe polishing up your skills so the green horse in the future has you at your peak abilities?

I have know a few with sacroiliac who rehabbed (extensively and following all veterinary advice) to lower level/RC and then eventually went lame again a few years later. I suspect you might be on borrowed time with him.

If I had the money in your situation, I would find a sharer for the Irish horse (who could then do chores on their days). Then I would look for a new horse to run alongside. Doesn’t have to be for eventing.
