I work part time on a yard and have another part time job too. Pretty soon we will have more horses so i will be taking on more hours and working full time.
Am i best to go on 'the books' or get self employed?
Are there any helpful websites etc on getting staff on your books that i could recommend to my employer?
Just any general advice would be great so that i can get things in place...ta!

If this job is your main work and you work regular hours / days the Inland Revenue will view it as employment. It is fairly easy to set you up as an employee - the IR web site has lots of useful advice and can send out a disk to calculate tax & ni.

The advantages to you are holiday pay and slightly more security. The YO would have to have employees insurance & of course comply with all the ever increasing law in this area.

If you prefer to go down the SE route then you need to inform the IR & submit tax returns - quite straightforward if you register to submit online.

Thanks for that will get the relevant information as/when i need to.
I guess i would like to be on the books to save me the headache of tax returns and paying this that and the other myself!

am afraid there is more to than you deciding to be self employed. You will have to meet certain criteria before HMRC will look at you being lawfully selfemployed. Things like control, hours, invoicing and using your own tools of the trade etc. If in doubt better of being employed. Employers especially horse business like workers to be self employed, they pay less money to HMRC and do not have the obligation of SSP, SMP and holiday pay.
But HMRC takes a dim view on a worker being self employed just because the 'company' and worker chooses to be self employed.
